Reality TV star and singer Vee Iye has publicly criticised popular comedian Seyi Law over his recent comments on Nigeria’s security situation, describing his remarks as insensitive and disconnected from the realities faced by many citizens.
The controversy began after Seyi Law appeared on an episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, where he was asked to compare the current state of security in Nigeria with that of ten years ago. In his response, the comedian argued that the country is now safer than it was a decade ago, pointing to what he described as a reduction in major attacks such as bombings and increased success in tackling banditry.
“Nigeria is safer now than 10 years ago. This government has killed more bandits since Jonathan’s. When last did you hear of a bomb blast? It is not today that they have been kidnapping people in their houses,” Seyi Law said during the discussion.
However, his statement quickly attracted backlash across social media, with many Nigerians disagreeing with his assessment and accusing him of downplaying the scale of insecurity still affecting different parts of the country. Among the most prominent voices to respond was Vee Iye, who took to her social media page to express her disappointment and frustration.
Quoting a part of Seyi Law’s statement, she wrote, “It’s not today that they have been kidnapping people in their house.” She then added, “A perfect example of a desensitised Nigerian citizen who can’t see past his own pockets.”
Vee’s response resonated strongly with many social media users, who echoed her concerns and argued that insecurity remains a major problem across Nigeria. Several commenters pointed out that while large-scale bombings may have reduced in some areas, kidnapping, armed robbery, communal clashes, and bandit attacks continue to claim lives and disrupt communities on a regular basis.
Many critics of Seyi Law’s comments insisted that measuring security solely by the frequency of bomb blasts overlooks the daily fears faced by ordinary Nigerians, particularly those living in rural communities and high-risk zones. They argued that the trauma experienced by victims of kidnapping and violent attacks should not be trivialised or normalised.
Supporters of Vee Iye also commended her for speaking up, saying her reaction reflected the pain and frustration felt by families who have lost loved ones or livelihoods to violent crimes. According to them, public figures have a responsibility to use their platforms to amplify the voices of the vulnerable, rather than appear dismissive of their suffering.
On the other hand, a few voices defended Seyi Law, suggesting that his comments may have been misunderstood or taken out of context. They argued that he was simply offering his perspective based on national security statistics and visible trends, not dismissing the experiences of victims. However, this viewpoint appeared to be in the minority, as the majority of reactions leaned toward criticism.
The exchange between the two celebrities has once again brought Nigeria’s security challenges into the spotlight, reigniting broader discussions about the effectiveness of government strategies, public perception, and the lived experiences of citizens. Analysts note that insecurity remains one of the most sensitive and emotionally charged issues in the country, making public commentary on the subject particularly contentious.
