BBNaija star Neo Akpofure has threatened legal action against a woman who accused him of rape on social media, escalating a controversy that has generated widespread reactions online.
The allegation surfaced on February 17, 2026, when an X user identified by the handle “the violently wicked (@notralia)” publicly accused the reality TV personality of raping her during their time as students at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
In her post, she alleged that they had been involved in a casual sexual relationship under the agreement that he was not in a committed relationship.
She claimed that after discovering he was allegedly seeing someone else, she confronted him at his apartment, where she said the incident occurred. She called on him to publicly deny the accusation.
In response, Neo, whose full name is Neo Akpofure, moved swiftly through his legal representatives. His lawyers issued a formal letter titled “Demand for Retraction and Public Apology for the Defamatory Publication Against Our Client, Mr. Neo Akpofure.” In the letter, the allegation was described as false, malicious, and defamatory.
According to the legal team, the accuser’s own statement acknowledged that both parties had previously engaged in a consensual casual sexual relationship.
The lawyers argued that labeling their client a rapist amounts to a grave criminal accusation capable of causing serious reputational harm, emotional distress, and significant professional damage.
They further maintained that publishing such claims on a global social media platform constitutes actionable libel under Nigerian law and may attract civil liability as well as possible criminal consequences.
The letter demanded that within 48 hours, the accuser must delete the alleged defamatory post and any related content shared across platforms.
She was also instructed to issue a clear and unequivocal public retraction stating that the allegations are false, publish a public apology on her X profile acknowledging that the statement was untrue and injurious, and provide a written undertaking not to make further defamatory remarks about Neo.
Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe, the letter warned, would result in immediate legal action, including the filing of a civil suit for defamation and the pursuit of other remedies available under Nigerian law.
Since the exchange became public, social media platforms have been flooded with mixed reactions. While some users have called for a thorough investigation and urged caution in handling such sensitive allegations, others have questioned the timing and credibility of the claims.
The development has once again sparked conversations about the impact of social media accusations, the presumption of innocence, and the legal implications of defamatory publications.
As of the time of this report, the accused has maintained his stance through his legal team, and attention remains focused on whether the accuser will comply with the demands outlined in the letter or whether the matter will proceed to court.
