As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Mexican authorities are turning to cutting-edge technology to enhance public safety at tournament venues.

A pack of robot dogs has been unveiled to assist police in tackling crime, particularly in high-risk situations, according to the city council of Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon state.

The animaloid robots, which were acquired for 2.5 million pesos (approximately $145,000), are designed to enter dangerous areas and provide live video feeds to officers on the ground.

This allows law enforcement personnel to assess situations remotely before taking action, minimizing risk to human officers. Guadalupe, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area, is among the cities hosting World Cup matches.

A demonstration video released by the local government shows one of the robots navigating an abandoned building, climbing stairs, and broadcasting live footage to officers trailing behind.

In a simulated scenario, the robo-hound confronted an armed individual and, using a loudspeaker, instructed him to drop his weapon. Such interventions illustrate how the robots can play a crucial role in initial threat assessment and de-escalation during the tournament.

“The purpose of these robots is to support police officers with initial intervention and to protect their physical safety,” said Guadalupe Mayor Hector Garcia. “They will be deployed in case of any altercation or potentially dangerous situation.”

The 2026 World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19, will be hosted jointly by Mexico, the United

States, and Canada. BBVA Stadium in Guadalupe, which will be temporarily renamed Estadio Monterrey for the tournament, is scheduled to host four matches. Organizers are keen to ensure that the event is not only a sporting spectacle but also safe for fans, players, and officials.

The use of robotics in law enforcement is part of a broader global trend in security technology. By integrating artificial intelligence and remote monitoring capabilities, authorities aim to reduce risks to personnel while improving efficiency in responding to threats.

In the context of the World Cup, where large crowds and high-profile events present unique security challenges, such innovations could prove invaluable.

While the robot dogs may attract attention for their futuristic design, their practical application underscores a serious commitment to public safety.

Authorities believe that deploying these devices ahead of and during the World Cup can help prevent incidents and ensure smooth tournament operations.

With the World Cup just months away, Mexico and its partner hosts are demonstrating that modern technology will play an increasingly central role in large-scale sporting event security, blending innovation with traditional policing methods to safeguard millions of fans worldwide.
