Nollywood veteran Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has officially released the trailer for her much-anticipated directorial debut, Mother’s Love. The feature film, which runs for 1 hour and 42 minutes, first premiered last year at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), generating significant buzz on social media platforms.
Mother’s Love follows the story of Labake, a determined woman who uses her wisdom and foresight to keep her family united amid looming challenges. At the heart of the narrative is Labake’s unwavering love for her husband, Rotimi, and her daughter, Adebisi, whose privileged upbringing is about to collide with a reality far different from what she has known.
The plot takes a dramatic turn when Adebisi departs home for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. There, she meets Obaro, a fellow corps member from Lagos’ Makoko slum. Despite the stark differences in their social and economic backgrounds, Adebisi embraces the new experience, but her father struggles to accept her relationship with Obaro, sparking tension and conflict that drives the story.
The film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Olumide Oworu, Ifeanyi Kalu, and Noray Nehita, bringing depth and authenticity to the story’s central themes of love, resilience, and family dynamics.
For Omotola, stepping behind the camera was an unplanned yet meaningful move. She explained that Mother’s Love was born out of a personal need to make a full return to Nollywood while exploring storytelling from a new perspective.
“Mother’s Love came as a story that I shot because I was under pressure, to be honest. I have been very truthful about the journey to Mother’s Love,” she revealed.
The actress shared that the idea emerged organically during discussions with her producer. “I just talked to my producer and said, ‘What if we did a feature film?’ And that was it. Immediately, back-to-back, we started planning for Mother’s Love. I just looked for stories I wanted to tell. At the end of the day, we shot Mother’s Love in less than two weeks.”
Omotola admitted that the film’s release was delayed partly because of her own self-consciousness. “I was just self-conscious, thinking about what people would say. You know, like, they might laugh at me or say it’s not good enough. But I knew I had to do it, and I didn’t have a choice.”
The trailer highlights a gripping story of love, sacrifice, and the challenges of bridging social divides, setting the stage for a feature that promises to resonate with audiences both in Nigeria and beyond.
With Mother’s Love, Omotola not only showcases her versatility as an actress but also cements her status as a creative force willing to take bold steps behind the camera. The film is already generating excitement as fans await its official release, eager to witness the veteran actress’ storytelling vision come to life.
