Nile Entertainment has been named the exclusive theatrical distribution partner for Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures across West Africa, marking a significant milestone for the region’s cinema industry.

The Lagos-based company announced the partnership on Friday via Instagram, describing the development as the beginning of a “new distribution era.”

According to the statement, the agreement aligns with Nile Entertainment’s broader mission to deepen the theatrical market, broaden access to global film titles and enhance cinema experiences for audiences across the sub-region.

The deal positions Nile Entertainment as a strategic gateway for major Hollywood releases into cinemas across West Africa, including Nigeria and Ghana, where the theatrical exhibition market has continued to evolve in recent years.

With cinema chains expanding into new urban centres and audiences showing renewed interest in the big-screen experience, the partnership is expected to strengthen the pipeline of international blockbusters into the region.

Universal Pictures, a subsidiary of Comcast’s NBCUniversal, is globally recognised for major franchises such as Fast & Furious, Jurassic World and Despicable Me. Paramount Pictures, owned by Paramount Global, boasts a catalogue that includes globally successful titles like Mission: Impossible, Transformers and A Quiet Place

Through this collaboration, films from both studios will now be distributed theatrically in West Africa under Nile Entertainment’s supervision.

Industry observers say the appointment reflects growing confidence in the West African box office, particularly Nigeria, which remains one of the continent’s largest film markets. In recent years, local productions have posted impressive box office numbers, while international titles have continued to draw strong cinema attendance.

The new arrangement is expected to offer cinema operators a steadier supply of globally anticipated releases, helping them attract diverse audiences seeking both local and foreign content.

Nile Entertainment operates under the Nile Media Entertainment Group, founded and led by Group Chief Executive Officer Moses Babatope.

The group also owns and manages Nile Cinemas, a cinema chain with outlets in major Nigerian cities. By combining distribution and exhibition under one umbrella, the company is positioned to streamline film rollouts, coordinate marketing campaigns and maximise audience reach across its network and partner cinemas.

The partnership could also contribute to improved release windows for West African audiences, ensuring that global blockbusters premiere in the region closer to their international release dates. This development is seen as crucial in curbing piracy and boosting legitimate box office revenue.

As the cinema landscape in West Africa continues to expand, the appointment signals a new phase of collaboration between global studios and regional distributors.

For Nile Entertainment, the agreement represents both a commercial opportunity and a strategic move to solidify its influence within the evolving African film ecosystem.
