A Nigerian health communication specialist has taken a bold personal stand against UBA chairman Tony Elumelu's recent public backing of President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms.

Ugochukwu Madu announced he shut down his and his wife's domiciliary (foreign currency) accounts at the bank after withdrawing every kobo. The move sparked a wave of online mockery, with some users sarcastically questioning the impact:

“Oh, how will Tony Elumelu now afford to pay rent?”

“Oh, you closed your account with $25 in it, what a huge loss to UBA.”In a sharp clapback, Madu fired back at the critics, calling out what he sees as widespread ignorance fueling political manipulation:

“The number of Nigerians that are dumb is staggering and that’s why politicians weaponize your illiteracy to continue to keep you in perpetual poverty.

Do you know what UBA marketers go through under the sun and rain to get someone to open a new NGN account, not to talk of a new USD account?I was begged and followed to open those accounts and I pitied the marketer and opened. Now, they’ve been closed forever and it’ll forever be in their records of customers they lost. You can weep forever oh ye APC slaves.”

He doubled down on his reasoning in the original announcement:“I opened two UBA domiciliary (FCY) accounts - one for me and another for my wife.

When we visited home recently, we withdrew all the money and closed both accounts. You’re free to join or endorse any party but once you endorse a questionable candidate, I withdraw my affiliation.”

The incident highlights growing frustration among some Nigerians over business leaders aligning with the current administration amid ongoing economic hardships, turning a simple banking decision into a viral symbol of protest.
