Hollywood has lost one of its most beloved actors, James Van Der Beek, who passed away at the age of 48. Best known for his iconic portrayal of Dawson Leery in the late 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek’s death was confirmed on Wednesday evening by his family via Instagram.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” the statement read. The family also appealed for privacy during their mourning, noting that more details about his life, wishes, and enduring love for humanity would be shared in due time. “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” they added.
Van Der Beek had been quietly battling colorectal cancer, which was diagnosed in late 2023. He revealed his illness publicly in November 2024, sharing his journey with fans in an effort to raise awareness about cancer.
