The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially rolled out the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, providing clarity on when key polls will take place.
Under the schedule released on Friday, Nigerians will head to the polls for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections will follow on March 6, 2027.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, the commission’s chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the early release of the election calendar is aimed at boosting preparedness and ensuring smoother coordination among stakeholders.
INEC explained that it had concluded work on the election timetable and related activities as far back as February 4, despite delays surrounding the amendment of the Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly. While submissions have already been made to lawmakers, the commission admitted that certain aspects of its schedule could still be adjusted, depending on when the new law is eventually passed.
The electoral body also recalled that the policy of early election planning began under former chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who introduced long-term scheduling to reduce uncertainty among voters and minimize operational challenges.
By publishing the 2027 election dates well ahead of time, INEC says it hopes to enhance transparency, improve logistics, and encourage early engagement from political parties, security agencies, and the electorate.
