In a landmark ruling that underscores the Anambra State Government’s determination to curb harmful ritual‑related practices, a State High Court sitting in Awka has sentenced celebrity native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki, to 11 months’ imprisonment for engaging in prohibited oke ite (ritual) activities and related offences. The judgment, delivered by Justice Jude Obiora, comes after Nwangwu admitted to carrying out ritual practices that posed danger to the community.
The case arose following a crackdown on individuals using spiritual practices for illegal purposes, including the preparation of charms for criminals and other activities that fuel insecurity in the state. During the trial, Nwangwu was found guilty on multiple counts of ritual-related offences and initially faced a longer prison term, but due to a plea agreement and time already spent in custody, his effective sentence was set at 11 months to be served at the Awka Correctional Centre.
As part of the court’s directive, the complete demolition of his shrine in Oba, Idemili South LGA, was ordered. All ritual items, including native pots, photographs, and figures believed to be used in oke ite practices, were destroyed. Justice Obiora stressed that these actions were necessary to dismantle structures used for illegal activities masquerading as cultural traditions.
The court also highlighted the rehabilitative aspect of the ruling, stating: “He will become an ambassador for youth re‑orientation. His Oba shrine is to be destroyed. He will no longer practise Okeite and won’t administer such charms.” Upon completing his jail term, Tiwaraki is expected to publicly renounce oke ite and advise young people against seeking wealth through supernatural or criminal means.
This ruling has generated widespread discussion in Anambra, reinforcing the government’s stance that cultural and traditional practices must never be used as a cover for actions that threaten public safety and social order.
