Actor Jide Awobona has shared why Valentine’s Day is not a big deal to him, revealing that a past experience turned what was meant to be a romantic outing into an unpleasant memory.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, the 41-year-old Nollywood star explained that he does not believe love should be restricted to one specific day on the calendar. According to him, love is something that should be expressed daily, not just on February 14.
Recalling a particular Valentine’s Day that went wrong, the actor said the day ended in a heated argument despite plans for a lovely outing.
He revealed that he had been on a phone call with a family member for hours while out with his date. What was supposed to be a special time together at a restaurant gradually turned sour.
“We went out one day and it ended horribly because throughout the day, I was on a call with one of my family members for hours. We actually went out to a restaurant to have a nice time, but at the end of the day, we fought and argued. It was not a good day,” he said.
Despite the unpleasant experience, Jide maintained that it did not change his perspective on love. He stressed that he does not need a special occasion before expressing affection to the people in his life.
“I don’t want to have a special day before I can show love. Every day is like Valentine’s Day for me. It depends on the vibe and the mood. I show love every day,” he added.
The actor also broadened the definition of love beyond romantic relationships. He noted that love should not be limited to couples but should extend to friends, family members and even strangers. For him, love surpasses intimacy and dating.
“You need to learn to show love to everybodyfriends, family, people you don’t know, people you know. Love supersedes intimacy or someone you’re dating. In my daily life, I try as much as possible to express love,” he said.
On how he typically spends Valentine’s Day, Jide disclosed that he is usually focused on his work. As an entertainer, he sees his craft as a way of spreading joy and connecting with people, regardless of the season.
“As I’m speaking with you, I’m at work. If it’s not Valentine’s Day, I’ll still be at work entertaining people. That’s what I do,” he stated.
He also addressed what he described as growing material expectations among young people in relationships. According to him, some individuals measure love by expensive gifts or grand gestures, which he believes shifts attention away from genuine feelings.
“A lot of them feel like, ‘If my boyfriend cannot do this for me, we can’t be together.’ That means you rate material things over how you feel for the person,” he said.
Jide is widely recognised for his role in the popular TV series Jenifa’s Diary, among other Nollywood productions. Over the years, he has also shared glimpses of his personal life online, celebrating milestones with his wife, including decades of friendship and marriage.
