Nollywood actress and filmmaker Debbie Shokoya has broken her silence over what she describes as a calculated attempt by some industry colleagues to block her from professional opportunities.
The actress, who is also a producer, took to her Instagram page to address troubling reports that certain production managers and coordinators have allegedly been spreading false information about her availability to work. According to Debbie, some colleagues have been telling producers that she cannot take up acting roles because she recently gave birth and is still nursing her child — a claim she firmly refuted.
In a strongly worded post, Debbie made it clear that motherhood has never stood in the way of her career. She emphasized that she resumed work just months after childbirth and has remained actively involved in film production ever since.
“IMPORTANT INFO‼️‼️
It’s High Time, I Addressed This….”
She explained that she has personally handled several job negotiations directly with producers and that those conversations often went smoothly, making the misinformation even more puzzling.
“I Have Heard How Some People Will Badmouth Actors To Producers, Just Because Of What Exactly?”
The actress questioned the motives behind what she sees as deliberate sabotage, suggesting that her refusal to tolerate disrespectful treatment may be the real reason behind the smear campaign.
“Till Today…Some PMs/Coordinators still lie to producers that I Am Unavailable Because I gave birth and am still nursing
How Nah???
My Kid Has Never Been An Issue!
I have been an active producer even right from 5 months after childbirth!
So Why Sabotaging Me Because I Refused To Be Treated Anyhow?”
Debbie also used the opportunity to speak on workplace respect in Nollywood, stressing that while compensation matters, professionalism and courtesy during negotiations are just as important to her.
“I Am A Producer!
I Treat Everyone With Respect On My Set…
But Some Of These People Come And Approach You Like You Don’t Have A Choice But To Jump At Jobs That Comes With Insult…”
She noted that being offered a large paycheck does not automatically equate to being valued, adding that tone and attitude during discussions often reveal how much respect a producer truly has for an actor.
“I Am One Person Who Doesn’t Mind The Money If It’s a good production, but the approach matters a lot to me!”
The actress also addressed labels such as “arrogant” and “difficult,” urging industry players to examine their own conduct before making such accusations.
“Before You Call Someone Rude Or Arrogant, How Was Your Approach?”
Debbie concluded her statement by appealing directly to producers, asking them to contact her personally rather than rely on third-party narratives.
“Enough Of The Lies Of ‘SHE’S NOT AVAILABLE, SHE WILL GIVE YOU PROBLEMS ON SET, SHE IS ARROGANT, HER CHARGE IS HIGH’…
Producers….Please Reach Out Yourself…
I Will Be Paid, I Am Considerate, But I Know What I Will Bring To The Table”.
Her message has since sparked conversations online about professionalism, gatekeeping, and the treatment of women especially mothers in the Nigerian film industry.
