Nigerian comedian Seyilaw has publicly apologised following backlash over his recent claim that Nigeria is safer now than it was ten years ago.

The remark, made during a podcast appearance where he commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its handling of insecurity, sparked heated reactions among netizens and victims of violent crimes.

During the podcast, Seyilaw praised the government’s security efforts, stating that the country had made significant progress compared to a decade ago.

However, the comment was met with criticism from Nigerians who argued that kidnappings, armed robbery, and other forms of violent crime remain pressing issues affecting communities nationwide.

As criticism mounted, the comedian released a video message addressing the controversy and offering a heartfelt apology.

 In his statement, he said:

“My fellow Nigerians,

I owe you this and more. You don’t deserve to have your sleep snatched away from you and the pain of one should be the pain of all.

I am sincerely and deeply sorry for such insensitive statement. I apologise to victims, families and everyone who has been affected in any way by the insecurity in the country.

As a supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, I want to also use this opportunity to call on him to intensify efforts in the battle against insecurity.

God bless you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Seyilaw acknowledged that his earlier statement may have caused distress, especially to families who have directly experienced the impact of insecurity in Nigeria. He further urged the federal government to strengthen its fight against crime and restore public confidence in national safety.

The development has reignited conversations around Nigeria’s security challenges, with many citizens demanding practical solutions and measurable improvements. Issues such as banditry, abductions, and armed attacks continue to dominate public discourse, making security one of the most sensitive topics in the country today.

Seyilaw’s public apology adds to the broader national debate about governance, accountability, and the lived realities of Nigerians navigating daily safety concerns.
