British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has revealed that a tragic incident involving longtime rival Anthony Joshua played a significant role in his decision to return to boxing.
Fury disclosed that the loss of two of Joshua’s close friends in a car accident in December deeply affected him and became a turning point in his own career.
Fury is set to return to the ring on April 11 after a 15-month absence. The 37-year-old will face Russian-born heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what marks yet another comeback in his rollercoaster boxing journey.
Fury had previously announced his retirement following his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk at the end of 2024. After spending a full calendar year out of action, he confirmed his latest return on January 4.
The announcement came shortly after Joshua was involved in a tragic car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Reflecting on the incident, Fury said the tragedy reminded him of life’s unpredictability and the importance of acting without delay.
“Tomorrow might not ever come,” Fury said. “The biggest turning point in this comeback for me was the tragedy that happened with Anthony Joshua. You should never put things off until tomorrow, or next year, or next week because tomorrow is not promised to anybody.”
Fury, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, emphasized that the event shifted his perspective and reignited his competitive fire.
Although fans have long anticipated a long-awaited showdown between Fury and Joshua, any plans for a potential 2026 clash have reportedly been put on hold for now.
Beyond personal motivation, Fury also claimed his return is driven by a desire to revive excitement in the heavyweight division. According to him, the sport has lacked energy and glamour during his absence.
“The truth of the matter is I came back for one reason only and that’s to make boxing great again,” he stated. “Since I’ve retired for the fifth time over a year ago, boxing for me has gone on a downward slope and it’s become quite boring.”
Known for his bold personality and outspoken nature, Fury has retired and returned multiple times throughout his career.
Each comeback has generated headlines and renewed interest in the heavyweight division. His upcoming bout against Makhmudov is expected to test his readiness and determine whether he can reestablish himself among the elite fighters in the sport.
As anticipation builds for April 11, Fury’s comments highlight how personal experiences outside the ring can profoundly shape decisions within it. Whether this comeback will lead to another championship run remains to be seen, but Fury appears determined to leave a lasting impact once again.
