South African music star Tyla has declared that Africans are only just getting started at the Grammy Awards, following her historic win at the 68th Annual Grammys.

The 24-year-old singer made history at the ceremony held at the Crypto.com Arena after becoming the first artiste to win the same Grammy category twice since it was introduced.

Tyla clinched the prestigious award for her single Push 2 Start, marking her second victory in the category.

Her first win came in 2024 with the global smash hit Water, a record-breaking moment that announced her arrival on the world stage and positioned her as one of Africa’s most successful international music exports.

With this latest achievement, Tyla has further cemented her growing influence in global pop music, joining a small list of African artistes who have managed to break into the Grammy spotlight and remain consistent.

Her success reflects the increasing global appetite for African sounds and storytelling, particularly from the continent’s younger generation of musicians.

Speaking to Billboard after receiving the award on Sunday, Tyla expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and emphasized what the moment represents for African artistes worldwide.

She described the win as surreal and inspiring, noting that it serves as proof that African creatives can compete and thrive on the biggest global stages.

“I’m so grateful. This is insane. It just shows me how far we can take it. Being from where I’m from, we really have a chance, and that’s just amazing,” she said, visibly emotional.

Beyond her personal success, Tyla stressed the importance of collective growth and representation for African musicians.

She explained that while progress has been made, there is still room for more African artistes to be celebrated and recognized globally, especially at major award platforms like the Grammys.

“When I was young, I wanted to see my girls getting Grammys and everything, and we’ve got that, but we need more. I’m excited to see the rest of our African superstars who are killing it right now be there as well. We are coming,” she added.

Tyla’s statement has since resonated across social media, with fans and fellow artistes praising her confidence and belief in Africa’s creative future. Many see her wins as a turning point that could open more doors for emerging African talents across different genres.

As African music continues to gain global attention through Afrobeats, Amapiano, and other regional sounds, Tyla’s Grammy success stands as a symbol of possibility.

Her journey reflects a broader movement, one where African artistes are no longer spectators but active contenders for the world’s biggest music honours.

With her growing catalog, international recognition, and unapologetic pride in her roots, Tyla appears poised to remain at the forefront of this new African wave and if her words are anything to go by, many more Grammy moments are on the way.
