Prior to his headline performance at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert in Rabat, Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy was briefly held up at the airport due to a customs check, CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed.
Incident at the Airport
Motsepe explained that Burna Boy’s arrival in Morocco on January 16 was interrupted when customs officials flagged his elaborate jewellery, which raised questions that required clarification. The brief delay threatened to interfere with the singer’s scheduled performance, causing some concern among event organizers.
“Recently was called that I need interven because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officers noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery. I intervened and it was resolved,” Motsepe stated.
The CAF president personally stepped in to assist, ensuring that the situation was handled efficiently and that Burna Boy could continue to the concert without further complications.
Back on Stage
Once the issue was resolved, Burna Boy took to the stage at the OLM Souissi Fan Zone later that evening, thrilling fans with a high-energy performance. His appearance marked the grand finale of live musical events surrounding AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
The concert was part of CAF’s tradition of combining football with entertainment, blending the excitement of the tournament with a lively musical celebration.
Supporting Acts
Alongside Burna Boy, the concert featured performances from Ghanaian reggae-dancehall star Stonebwoy and Moroccan artists Stormy and Jaylann. The lineup provided a rich mix of African musical styles, offering fans a diverse experience while celebrating the continent’s culture alongside the football festivities.
The event drew large crowds, with attendees from Morocco and beyond enjoying a combination of football-themed entertainment and live music. Burna Boy’s headlining set, in particular, received widespread praise for its energy, stage presence, and crowd interaction.
Context and Significance
The brief airport delay highlighted some of the logistical challenges that can occur when high-profile performers travel internationally with valuable personal items. Motsepe’s intervention ensured that Burna Boy could deliver his performance as planned, avoiding potential disruptions to the AFCON Fan Zone schedule.
AFCON 2025 has been notable for pairing major football matches with top-tier music performances, including a star-studded opening ceremony in Rabat featuring Davido, RedOne, and French Montana. The fan zone concerts have continued this trend, blending sports excitement with cultural celebrations and live entertainment for spectators.
A Night to Remember
Burna Boy’s triumphant performance came just ahead of Morocco’s final against Senegal and Nigeria’s third-place playoff against Egypt, marking a fitting end to a week of football and entertainment festivities. Fans and commentators alike celebrated the smooth resolution of the airport incident, allowing the artist to focus fully on his performance and energize the crowd.
The event further reinforced Burna Boy’s status as one of Africa’s leading live performers and underscored the CAF’s commitment to combining football with world-class cultural experiences for fans attending AFCON.
