The United Kingdom is considering strong regulatory action against Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, following growing concerns over the misuse of its artificial intelligence tool, Grok.
The platform is facing possible restrictions or even a ban in the UK after reports revealed that the AI tool has been used to generate illegal and highly sexualised images of women and children.
The controversy centres on Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Musk’s xAI and integrated into X. According to reports, users have exploited the tool to create images depicting individuals including minors in undressed or sexualised poses.
Some of these AI-generated images were reportedly shared on dark web forums, raising serious alarms among UK authorities and child protection groups.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reacted strongly to the reports, describing the situation as “disgraceful” and “disgusting.”
He confirmed that he has instructed media regulator Ofcom to consider “all options” in addressing the issue. Starmer stressed that the creation and distribution of child sexual abuse material is illegal under UK law and would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Speaking on the matter, the Prime Minister stated that the government is prepared to take decisive action if platforms fail to protect users, particularly children.
His comments have intensified speculation that X could face severe penalties or be effectively blocked in the UK if it does not take immediate and adequate steps to prevent further abuse.
Under the UK’s Online Safety Act, Ofcom has the power to intervene when platforms allow unlawful content to spread. This includes the authority to seek court orders that could restrict or block access to services found to be in serious breach of the law.
The Act is designed to hold tech companies accountable and ensure stronger safeguards against harmful and illegal online material.
Investigations by internet safety watchdogs reportedly uncovered AI-generated images linked to Grok that constituted child sexual abuse material.
Although some of the content was not hosted directly on X, the association with the platform’s AI technology has raised serious questions about oversight, safeguards, and responsibility.
In response to the backlash, X has reportedly limited some of Grok’s image-editing features. However, critics argue that these measures are insufficient, given the severity of the allegations.
Advocacy groups and lawmakers have continued to call for stricter controls, improved AI moderation systems, and greater transparency from the company.
The controversy has also sparked wider discussions about the dangers of generative AI and its potential misuse. Governments around the world are increasingly grappling with how to regulate rapidly advancing AI technologies while balancing innovation with public safety.
As pressure mounts, the future of X in the UK remains uncertain. With public outrage growing and regulators empowered to act, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether the platform can continue operating in the country or face unprecedented restrictions.
