Nollywood filmmaker Biodun Stephen has once again voiced strong concerns over what she describes as a growing and troubling habit of women stepping out in public without wearing underwear. The filmmaker, known for her outspoken views on social issues, said a recent experience at a salon pushed her to speak out yet again.

In a video shared on TikTok, Stephen explained that her stance against the practice is not new, noting that she has been calling attention to it for nearly a decade. According to her, rather than fading out, the trend appears to be gaining ground, which she finds alarming.

“I believe the first time I talked about ladies not putting on pants was in 2015. Let’s try to always wear pants, there are several types. Why don’t we like wearing pants?” she said in the video.

Stephen went on to recount a personal experience that prompted her latest reaction. She explained that she had gone to a salon to get her hair done when another woman arrived for a pedicure. The woman, she said, was dressed in a very short outfit, and when she sat down, her private area became visible.

“Last week, I went to get my hair done at the salon. A lady came in to do her pedicure. As she sat, I looked at her side, I saw her vagina in full display,” Stephen narrated.

The filmmaker described the moment as uncomfortable and unnecessary, stressing that salons and similar public places are not appropriate environments for such exposure. She questioned why some women choose outfits that easily expose them, especially when alternatives are readily available.

Stephen also challenged the idea that avoiding underwear should be seen as fashionable. In her view, personal comfort and decency should not be sacrificed in the name of trends.

“Who is teaching us all these fashion? Is it a fashion trend not to wear pant?” she asked.

“You are coming for a pedicure, you would at least wear something long. Must you wear mini gown or skirt without pant? Why is pant your enemy? Who told you pant is your enemy? Who told you it isn’t good for you? Please stop doing it. This is not fashion, it is nuisance.”

She emphasised that underwear serves a practical purpose and should not be treated as optional, particularly in public spaces where sitting positions or movements can easily lead to accidental exposure.

According to Stephen, the issue is not about policing women’s bodies but about encouraging a sense of awareness and responsibility in shared spaces. She noted that what may feel comfortable or stylish to one person can create discomfort for others around them.

This is not the first time the filmmaker has spoken publicly on the subject. In August 2025, she addressed a viral incident involving a female passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos. Following reports that the passenger’s outfit led to unintended exposure during the flight, Stephen used the opportunity to reiterate her message about the importance of wearing underwear, especially in situations where movement or seating arrangements could result in embarrassment.

At the time, she stressed that public settings such as airplanes, salons, and public transport require a higher level of consideration, given how close people are to one another.

Stephen’s renewed comments have since sparked conversations online, with some agreeing that basic dressing etiquette is important, while others argue for personal freedom in fashion choices. Despite the mixed reactions, the filmmaker remains firm in her stance, insisting that decency should not be dismissed as outdated or oppressive.

For Stephen, the conversation goes beyond fashion trends and into the realm of common sense. As she made clear in her video, wearing underwear is not a restriction but a simple measure to avoid unnecessary exposure and discomfort in public spaces.
