Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has sparked widespread online conversation after openly criticising men who complain about feeling ignored after their wives give birth.
Her comments, delivered in a video currently circulating across social media platforms, have reignited discussions around postpartum care, emotional labour, and the realities of childbirth.
In the viral clip, the award-winning artiste firmly stated that the period following childbirth should be focused on the mother’s recovery and the newborn’s wellbeing, not the emotional discomfort of fathers who feel sidelined.
According to Simi, childbirth is a physically and emotionally demanding experience that requires empathy, patience, and active support from partners rather than resentment.
She drew attention to the intense toll pregnancy and labour take on women, mentioning medical procedures, body swelling, extreme fatigue, hormonal changes, and prolonged sleepless nights that often continue long after delivery. Simi stressed that these sacrifices far outweigh any short-term lack of attention men may experience, noting that such complaints often dismiss the pain and risks women endure.
The singer also criticised the social habit of immediately asking new mothers about their husbands shortly after childbirth.
She argued that such questions shift attention away from women who have just undergone months of bodily changes and potential medical complications, insisting that concern should be directed first at the mother and baby.
Following her remarks, social media users flooded comment sections with personal experiences and strong opinions.
One user, @salem4tweeter, explained: “How is the daddy?” The question is usually asked after we have asked about the mother and the baby… NO ONE SHOULD GO AND ASK THE WOMAN ‘how is the daddy?’ because, obviously, there has been a shift of attention but oh well.”
Another commenter, @Bolu22942805, bluntly added: “Fact on fact… why ask such when the woman just gave birth in the hospital? That moment is for the mother n the newborn. did daddy push or contract?”
Some reactions highlighted deeper postpartum struggles.
@alufa_joy wrote: “Even after all of this that same, man will tell you after 4 months that your private part is not the same again… Your private part is loose.” Meanwhile,
@GodwinLovett shared a medical ordeal: “My senior sis suffered nerve damage… They said is ‘foot drop’. She goes for electric physiotherapy every week.”
Others used humour to underline frustration. @abass_ganiyat commented: “That’s not your moment… but some daddies want peppersoup.”
@Don7thgarb concluded: “You now see why the ‘daddy’ must not be there? So the ‘mummy’ can savour her moment alone.”
Simi’s statement has continued to fuel debate, with many agreeing that childbirth demands compassion, respect, and unwavering support for women navigating one of the most physically demanding phases of life.
