A heated online exchange has erupted between Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and Grammy Award-winning singer Wizkid, following a public disagreement over comparisons between the modern-day superstar and the legendary musician.
The clash began after Seun Kuti openly criticised fans of Wizkid who have repeatedly drawn parallels between the “Ojuelegba” singer and his father, Fela. Seun argued that such comparisons were inappropriate and failed to recognise the depth of Fela’s historical significance, particularly his role as a cultural revolutionary and political activist.
According to Seun, comparing contemporary pop success to Fela’s legacy diminishes the sacrifices, struggles, and impact of the Afrobeat pioneer, whose music was deeply rooted in resistance against oppression, corruption, and military rule in Nigeria. His comments quickly gained attention online, prompting reactions from fans on both sides.
The situation took a dramatic turn on Tuesday night when Wizkid responded directly to Seun’s remarks via his Instagram Stories. In a series of strongly worded posts, the singer launched personal insults at Seun and appeared to place himself above the late Afrobeat legend.
In one of the posts, Wizkid wrote, “@bigbirdkuti I’m Big Wiz everyday bigger than your papa!! Wetin u one do fool? Hungry bastard.” The message immediately went viral, sparking outrage, shock, and intense debate across social media platforms.
Wizkid did not stop there. He later carried the feud to X, formerly known as Twitter, where he continued his attack by contrasting Fela’s activism with Seun’s public engagements. In another post, he wrote, “Fela fight for freedom this fool dey fight for fc! Oloshi omo ale!”
The comment was widely interpreted as a dismissal of Seun’s activism, suggesting that it fell short of the lifelong political and social struggle championed by his father. The language used in the post further inflamed tensions, with many social media users criticising Wizkid for what they described as disrespectful remarks toward a cultural icon.
Seun Kuti eventually responded but chose a noticeably restrained and sarcastic approach. Rather than matching Wizkid’s aggressive tone, Seun shared a screenshot of one of Wizkid’s posts on his Instagram page and added a brief caption that appeared to mock the situation.
“Just be yourself short man. You are also great,” Seun wrote, a response that many interpreted as both dismissive and ironic.
The exchange has since ignited widespread conversations online, dividing fans and observers across Nigeria’s music landscape. While some Wizkid supporters defended the singer, arguing that modern achievements and global influence should not be downplayed, others condemned the personal attacks and called for respect toward Fela’s legacy.
On the other hand, supporters of Seun Kuti praised his composure and insisted that Fela’s influence extends far beyond music sales or international awards. They argued that Fela’s activism, cultural resistance, and global ideological impact place him in a category that cannot be compared to contemporary pop stars.
The feud has also reopened broader debates about generational influence within Nigerian music, with many questioning how legacy should be measured. While Wizkid represents the global commercial success of Afrobeats, Fela remains a symbol of resistance, African identity, and political consciousness.
As of the time of this report, neither Wizkid nor Seun Kuti has issued further statements to de-escalate the situation. However, the online spat continues to trend, serving as a reminder of how deeply conversations around legacy, respect, and cultural history resonate within Nigeria’s entertainment space.
The clash underscores a larger tension between modern stardom and historical significance, a debate that remains unresolved but passionately defended on both sides of the divide.
