The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one individual in connection with the death of popular Nigerian singer Adesina Afeez, professionally known as Destiny Boy. The development comes amid growing public concern and speculation following the sudden passing of the young artiste.
According to the police, the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), specifically the Homicide Section, where a thorough investigation is currently underway. Authorities say the move is aimed at ensuring a detailed and transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
In an official statement released on Monday, the command disclosed that investigations had commenced into the demise of the 22-year-old musician. Police officials confirmed that one suspect is presently in custody, while detectives continue to gather evidence and question relevant individuals connected to the case.
The news of Destiny Boy’s death first emerged on Sunday after distressing videos began circulating on social media. The clips, which quickly went viral, showed the lifeless body of the singer being conveyed to a mortuary, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans and fuelling intense online speculation about what might have led to his death.
One of the widely shared videos captured the late singer lying in the back of a vehicle, with cotton wool placed in his ears and nostrils, a sight that deeply unsettled many viewers and intensified calls for clarity regarding the incident.
As rumours and unverified claims continued to spread online, an unidentified associate of the singer later released another video in an attempt to address the situation and calm public speculation. In the video, the associate suggested that Destiny Boy had been battling a health-related issue before his death.
“I’m making this video so people won’t spread false stories about Destiny Boy’s death. Everyone comes into this world to fulfil their destiny. May God grant him eternal rest. Destiny had been battling a health problem. We did our best for him, but sadly, he didn’t survive,” the associate said.
Despite this explanation, the police have maintained that investigations will continue until all facts surrounding the case are fully established. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the alleged health condition played a direct role in the singer’s death or how it relates to the ongoing investigation.
Destiny Boy, born Afeez Adeshina, began his musical journey at a very young age and steadily built a name for himself within Nigeria’s music scene. He was particularly known for his unique fusion of Fuji music with modern, contemporary sounds, a style that earned him a loyal following among young listeners.
He started his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he initially worked as a backup dancer for veteran Fuji musician Pasuma. His big break came in 2019 when he released a Fuji-inspired cover of Davido’s hit song If. The cover gained massive attention online and propelled him into the spotlight.
Following the success of that release, Destiny Boy went on to deliver Fuji-style covers of songs by top Nigerian artistes including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor, further cementing his reputation as one of the promising young voices in the genre.
Beyond music, the late singer had recently embraced fatherhood. In November 2024, he welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide, a milestone that many fans have described as making his sudden death even more heartbreaking.
The Ogun State Police Command has assured members of the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress, urging patience while detectives work to uncover the full details surrounding the tragic loss of the young artiste.
