Nigerian social media commentator and writer Solomon Buchi has sparked widespread debate online after sharing a blunt message about relationships, financial stability, and partner selection. His comments, which quickly went viral, challenged the long-standing tendency to romanticise poverty in romantic relationships, particularly when it comes to choosing a life partner.

In a post shared on Thursday, Buchi cautioned women against assuming that a man’s lack of money is evidence of good character, vision, or long-term potential. He stressed that financial hardship on its own should not be mistaken for moral superiority or a guarantee of future success, noting that wealth status whether low or high should be approached with equal discernment.

According to Buchi, being broke does not automatically make a man kind, responsible, or marriage-ready. He warned that idealising financial struggle can lead to unrealistic expectations and poor relationship decisions, especially when other important qualities such as discipline, purpose, and emotional maturity are overlooked.

He wrote:

“Not every broke guy is good. Not every broke guy has a great future. Not every broke guy has a vision.

Not every broke guy will make a wonderful husband. Be careful when choosing a broke guy, just as you would when trying to choose a rich guy.

Poverty is not another name for virtue.”

The post immediately drew strong reactions across social media platforms. While some users praised Buchi for his honesty and realism, others criticised him for what they described as an overly harsh or materialistic perspective on love.

Supporters argued that his message encourages women to make wiser, more intentional choices rather than relying on hope or emotional narratives, while critics felt the statement dismissed the struggles of hardworking but financially challenged men.

Despite the mixed reactions, the conversation has continued to trend, highlighting ongoing societal tensions around love, money, and marriage. Many commenters noted that Buchi’s message was not about wealth worship but about balance, caution, and critical thinking when choosing a partner. The discussion has also reignited broader conversations about financial readiness, responsibility, and expectations in modern relationships.

As debates continue online, Solomon Buchi’s statement has once again proven his ability to provoke uncomfortable but widely discussed conversations around relationships and financial realities in today’s society.
