Celebrity fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani, has called on the Federal Government to urgently regulate Nigeria’s healthcare system following what she described as negligence by a Lagos-based private hospital.
Lawani made the call in a strongly worded post shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, January 11, 2026, shortly after accusing Euracare Hospital of mismanaging her health during and after a spine surgery.
The founder of Tiannah Empire alleged that complications from the procedure were a result of negligence on the part of the hospital.
According to Lawani, her experience has exposed serious lapses within Nigeria’s private healthcare sector, especially the lack of proper oversight and accountability.
She claimed that many hospitals operate more like business centres rather than healthcare institutions genuinely committed to saving lives.
The celebrity designer alleged that most of the doctors at the hospital were not permanent staff, stating that they only come in to perform surgeries and leave immediately afterward.
She accused the facility of using “international standards” as a marketing strategy to lure unsuspecting patients while failing to provide adequate medical care.
“Nigeria’s health care system needs regulation. Anybody from abroad can have money and come open hospital in Nigeria as a business and do as they wish,” Lawani wrote.
She further warned Nigerians who can afford it to seek medical treatment outside the country, stressing that lives are at risk due to poor regulation and weak enforcement of healthcare standards.
“But seeing Chimamanda Adichie’s story today triggered me to speak up so that so many people can be saved. Euracare is like a business center. Most of the doctors there are not even permanent doctors. They come, perform surgeries, and go. If you have health issues in Nigeria and you have money, run,” she added.
Lawani’s outburst followed recent allegations by renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who accused the same hospital of negligence over the death of her son.
While details of Adichie’s claims are still unfolding, the accusation has sparked widespread conversations on social media about medical negligence, accountability, and patient safety in Nigeria.
The fashion entrepreneur has been vocal about her health struggles in recent months. She previously revealed that she suffered severe complications after undergoing surgery for a degenerative spine condition.
In earlier posts, Lawani disclosed that she could no longer speak or walk properly, blaming her condition on medical errors during the procedure.
Her revelations have drawn mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy and sharing similar experiences of alleged medical negligence in private hospitals across the country.
Others have called for thorough investigations into the claims against Euracare and stricter enforcement of healthcare regulations nationwide.
Lawani insisted that her decision to speak out was not driven by malice but by a desire to prevent further loss of lives.
She urged regulatory bodies and the government to prioritise healthcare reforms, stressing that Nigerians deserve safe and professional medical services regardless of whether the hospital is public or private.
As calls for accountability grow louder, many Nigerians are now demanding transparency, improved regulation, and stronger monitoring of healthcare facilities to ensure patient safety and restore public confidence in the country’s health system.
