The incident occurred on the set of a movie in Abeokuta, Ogun State, leaving colleagues, fans, and industry insiders in shock.

According to statements released by popular Nigerian director and producer James Abinibi, the accident took place during a filming session where James was experimenting with pyrotechnics.

The explosion occurred in a designated effects preparation area outside the main film set. Reports indicate that the special effects work involved the use of a gas cylinder, which triggered an unexpected blast.

In his statement on the RockBottom Flix Instagram page, Abinibi explained, “During a filming session, a sudden and unexpected explosion occurred in a designated effects preparation area outside the film set, where James was experimenting with an unauthorised pyrotechnic stimulation involving a gas cylinder alongside his two assistants.”

The explosion resulted in severe injuries for James Akaie. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries, marking a heartbreaking end to a career celebrated for creativity and innovation in Nollywood.

His two assistants, who were also caught in the blast, sustained burn injuries but were taken to a specialist hospital, where they received immediate medical attention. Thankfully, reports confirm that the assistants are now stable and continue to receive treatment.

James Akaie had carved out a remarkable niche in the Nigerian film industry as one of the leading special effects artists, working on numerous Nollywood productions over the years.

His expertise in creating visually compelling and realistic effects earned him recognition among directors, producers, and audiences alike. Many of his works contributed to raising production standards in the Nigerian movie industry, blending technical precision with creative storytelling.

The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media and within the Nollywood community. Colleagues and fans have expressed condolences, reflecting on his talent, dedication, and the impact he had on Nollywood.

Many have described him as a pioneer in the field of special effects, whose passion for cinematic innovation inspired younger artists and technicians in the industry.

Safety on film sets has been a recurring concern in the industry, with previous incidents highlighting the risks associated with pyrotechnics and other practical effects when proper safety measures are not fully observed.

The tragic accident involving James Akaie serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous safety protocols in the film-making process, especially when handling combustible materials or experimental special effects.
