Inspired by a real-life incident that unfolded in Miami years ago, this gripping crime thriller refuses to play it safe, delivering an intense cinematic experience that demands your full attention from start to finish.
Starring Ben Affleck, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Scott Adkins, Lina Esco, Steven Yeun, and a strong supporting cast, The RIP is not the kind of film you casually scroll through while multitasking. It pulls you in immediately and keeps you locked in, leaving no room for distraction.
A Story That Commands Focus
At this point in my movie-watching journey, I am less interested in films that simply pass time and more drawn to stories that stimulate thought. The RIP does exactly that. It doesn’t gently ease you into its narrative; instead, it throws you straight into a tense, morally complex world where every decision has consequences.
While I usually avoid police-focused films because many follow predictable patterns, The RIP breaks away from convention. The officers here are not one-dimensional heroes or villains. They are calculated, invasive, unpredictable, and constantly operating in moral grey areas. The story thrives on layered twists, strategic maneuvering, and carefully constructed suspense that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
Tension That Never Lets Up
One of the film’s greatest strengths is how effectively it sustains tension. Scene after scene raises unsettling questions that linger long after they pass. Why would anyone investigate a Morse-code-linked house alone? What logic justified leaving the women behind to count money found in a stash house? How does one stay calm after receiving a call that your entire team has only thirty minutes of oxygen left?
Each moment escalates anxiety, pushing the audience deeper into the psychological weight of the story. Surprisingly, despite the constant stress, I never felt the urge to pause, skip ahead, or relieve the tension. Instead, I leaned into it, allowing the pressure to build naturally. The suspense feels intentional, controlled, and expertly paced, never chaotic or overdone.
Performances That Carry Emotional Weight
The film’s cast delivers commendable performances across the board, but one particular detective stood out to me. Though his name escapes me at the moment, his role as the officer who receives the final message from Jackie’s burner phone left a lasting impression. His portrayal of quiet grief, emotional restraint, and unwavering professionalism was deeply compelling.
Watching him navigate personal loss while remaining committed to his duty added emotional depth to the film. It was a powerful reminder that strength does not always announce itself loudly; sometimes, it exists in composure, discipline, and silent resolve.
Sarge also deserves recognition for his leadership portrayal. Firm, strategic, and calculating, he demonstrated what decisive leadership looks like under extreme pressure. His ability to unite the team around a singular objective, manipulate Desi, and outthink Detective Ro (also known as Mike) showcased a level of tactical intelligence that set him apart. His moves were deliberate and effective, placing him firmly in a class of his own.
A Well-Measured Runtime
At just under two hours, The RIP makes excellent use of its runtime. The pacing feels deliberate, with no unnecessary scenes or rushed conclusions. The film builds intrigue, sustains suspense, and ties up its narrative threads without leaving unresolved questions.
Nothing feels wasted. Each scene serves a purpose, whether advancing the plot or deepening character dynamics. This careful balance ensures that the film remains engaging throughout, never dragging or overstaying its welcome.
