Actress Teniola Aladese has stirred conversation online after sharing her candid views on marriage, self-discovery, and why she believes many women need to experience living alone before tying the knot.

Speaking during a recent discussion, the Nollywood star noted that a significant number of women move directly from their parents’ homes into marriage without ever having the opportunity to truly understand themselves.

According to her, this pattern often leaves women unprepared for the realities that come with married life.

Teniola explained that living alone provides an essential period of self-awareness that many women miss.

She pointed out that without spending time independently, some women do not fully know what they like, what they dislike, what they can tolerate, or the kind of habits and character traits they can genuinely live with in a partner. As a result, marriage can come as a shock when real-life differences begin to surface.

The actress stressed that this lack of self-knowledge is one of the reasons many women feel overwhelmed after getting married.

She said the sudden exposure to another person’s habits, routines, and mannerisms can be difficult to process, especially when those habits clash with personal values or expectations that were never clearly defined beforehand.

According to Teniola, living alone helps a woman understand her boundaries. From managing personal space to handling finances, emotions, and daily routines, independence teaches lessons that are difficult to learn within the structure of a family home.

She added that these experiences help women become more confident in expressing their needs and setting standards in relationships.

The actress further noted that self-discovery before marriage can prevent the common situation where people later feel trapped in unions they were not fully prepared for.

In her words, many women eventually find themselves saying, “This is not what I signed up for,” simply because they never had the chance to figure out who they truly were before committing to a lifelong partnership.

Teniola’s comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media. While some users agreed with her perspective, describing it as realistic and necessary in modern times, others argued that living alone is not a prerequisite for a successful marriage, citing cultural, financial, and religious reasons.

Despite the differing opinions, her remarks have sparked an important conversation around personal growth, independence, and emotional readiness for marriage.

By encouraging women to understand themselves first, Teniola Aladese has once again used her platform to address societal expectations and challenge long-held norms surrounding relationships and marriage.

The actress concluded by emphasising that marriage should not be entered into blindly, but with clarity, self-awareness, and a strong understanding of one’s values—qualities she believes are often shaped through independent living.
