The Lagos State Government has ordered a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who passed away at a private hospital in Lagos.

The tragic incident occurred after the toddler, one of Adichie’s twin sons, fell ill with what initially appeared to be mild cold symptoms that rapidly escalated into a severe infection. In a public statement, Adichie accused the medical team of “criminal negligence,” describing the anaesthesiologist involved as “criminally negligent, fatally casual, and careless with the precious life of a child.” She alleged that improper sedation and insufficient monitoring during procedures contributed to her son’s death.

Following the public outcry, Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, where Nkanu was receiving care, confirmed that it had initiated an internal review into the incident. While expressing condolences to the family, the hospital maintained that some circulating reports contained inaccuracies. Euracare described itself as a facility equipped for complex medical procedures with internationally trained personnel, noting that Nkanu had been referred to the hospital for specialized diagnostic tests after prior care at two other pediatric centres.

“Despite these efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after arriving at our facility,” the hospital stated, adding that its medical team had adhered to internationally recognized clinical protocols and worked in consultation with external specialists recommended by the family.

The Lagos State Government, having received formal notification of the incident on January 6, also expressed heartfelt sympathies to Adichie and her family. A statement signed by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, emphasized the government’s commitment to human life and zero tolerance for medical negligence.

“The Lagos State Government places the highest value on human life and maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct in any health facility operating within the state,” the statement read.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to carry out a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the death. The agency has already begun reviewing reports and visiting the facility to gather firsthand information. HEFAMAA’s inquiry will focus on verifying adherence to clinical protocols, evaluating the professional conduct of staff, and determining patient safety standards.

“In line with this commitment, the Governor of Lagos State has instructed HEFAMAA to immediately commence a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the objective of identifying the immediate and underlying causes of the death,” the statement added.

The investigation will also involve collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a credible and conclusive inquiry. The findings of the investigation are expected to be made public upon completion.

The state government assured residents that any individual or institution found guilty of negligence or professional misconduct will face sanctions according to existing laws. It also urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.

“The Lagos State Government reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all residents, while strengthening oversight and accountability in medical practice across the state,” the statement concluded.

This move marks a decisive step by Lagos authorities to address public concerns over medical standards and patient safety following a case that has drawn nationwide attention and highlighted the critical importance of professional conduct in healthcare facilities.
