Harvesters International Christian Centre, a Lagos-based church, has unveiled a financial assistance programme aimed at supporting members who are actively serving in the church but are currently without jobs. The initiative is designed to provide short-term relief as beneficiaries search for new employment opportunities.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the church’s Senior Pastor, Bolaji Idowu, during a regular worship service. Addressing the congregation, the cleric explained that the programme targets committed church workers who recently lost their jobs and are in transition between employments.
According to Pastor Idowu, beneficiaries of the initiative will receive a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 for a period of three months. He noted that the support is intended to help ease financial pressure while recipients work towards securing new jobs. “All those that serve in church that are in between jobs — you used to have a job and you lost it — for the next three months, we’ll be giving you ₦50,000 every month to help them until they get their next job,” he said.
The pastor clarified that the scheme is open to both leaders and members serving across various departments within the church. He stressed that the decision reflects the church’s responsibility to care for its members beyond spiritual matters, especially during difficult times. “So all of those leaders that serve in church that I just mentioned, we’re giving ₦50,000 just to help them stabilise. One of the things the church should do is to be there for one another, to help them stabilise,” Idowu added.
He further explained that the programme is rooted in the church’s belief in community support and shared responsibility, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with job losses and rising living costs. Pastor Idowu described the initiative as a practical expression of compassion and solidarity within the Christian faith.
Eligible members were encouraged to formally register for the support through their pastors or the church administration. Idowu assured the congregation that the registration process would be simple and built on trust rather than rigorous screening procedures. “If you’re in that category, you should see your pastor and the church administration and register. We’re not going to do so many interviews because for you to serve, we trust that you are honest,” he said.
The announcement was met with loud applause and positive reactions from members of the congregation, many of whom described the initiative as timely and thoughtful. Several attendees noted that the scheme demonstrates the church’s awareness of the economic realities facing its members and its willingness to respond with practical solutions.
In recent months, Nigeria has experienced increased economic strain, with unemployment and underemployment affecting many households. Faith-based organisations have increasingly stepped in to provide relief and support, ranging from food distribution to financial assistance programmes. Harvesters’ initiative adds to this growing trend of churches offering structured support systems for members facing financial hardship.
Pastor Idowu reiterated that the goal of the programme is not long-term dependency but temporary assistance. He encouraged beneficiaries to remain proactive in seeking new opportunities while taking advantage of the support being offered.
The church leadership expressed hope that the initiative would not only help members meet immediate needs but also strengthen bonds within the congregation. By combining spiritual guidance with practical care, the church aims to foster a culture of empathy, responsibility, and shared growth among its members.
As the programme rolls out, church officials say further details will be communicated to ensure smooth implementation and accountability, reinforcing the church’s commitment to supporting its workforce during challenging seasons.
