A Nigerian lawyer has sparked widespread online attention after sharing crucial legal guidance on how to respond if a partner unexpectedly dies at home.
The advice, delivered in a viral TikTok video, has ignited discussions across social media, with many describing it as both alarming and essential.
In the video, the lawyer warned against fleeing the scene in a state of panic, stressing that such a reaction could severely damage one’s legal standing, even for those who are innocent. “Don’t run. If you run, it will automatically be presumed that you are guilty, and it will become very difficult to prove your innocence,” he cautioned, highlighting the dangers of impulsive decisions during high-pressure situations.
He further emphasized the importance of preserving the scene, advising individuals never to touch the body, clean bloodstains, or wipe surfaces. Tampering with evidence, he explained, could be seen as an attempt to destroy proof and may result in severe legal consequences, including imprisonment.
The lawyer stressed that immediate action is critical. Authorities should be notified without delay, and legal representation should be sought as soon as the police arrive. He recommended limiting statements to a single, simple declaration if a lawyer is not yet present: “She passed away and I reported immediately. That’s all. Don’t say anything else unless your lawyer is present.”
The guidance has resonated with many Nigerians, with social media users acknowledging the discomfort of the advice but recognizing its necessity in protecting one’s legal rights.
The video serves as a stark reminder that maintaining composure, preserving evidence, and seeking proper legal counsel can make a significant difference in navigating a tragic and legally complex scenario.
