The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the GRA Police Station, Asaba, Delta State, has been removed from office and sanctioned following serious allegations of misconduct involving a Nigerian good Samaritan, Tomi Wojuola. The development has sparked widespread public attention and renewed conversations around police accountability in Nigeria.
The incident came to light after Wojuola took to social media to narrate his troubling experience, claiming he was nearly framed for murder after attempting to save the life of a dying man.
According to his account, he encountered a man who suddenly collapsed by the roadside. Acting out of compassion and a sense of civic duty, Wojuola rushed the unconscious man to a nearby hospital in Asaba. Unfortunately, medical personnel later confirmed that the man had passed away.
Wojuola explained that in a bid to act responsibly, he proceeded to a police station to officially report the incident and document his involvement. However, what was meant to be a routine report allegedly turned into a nightmare.
He claimed that the DPO accused him of murder, threatened him, and subjected him to undue harassment. The good Samaritan further stated that “only divine intervention” saved him from being wrongly implicated in a crime he did not commit.
The story quickly gained traction online, drawing outrage from Nigerians who condemned the alleged actions of the senior police officer. Many social media users called on the Delta State Police Command to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure justice was served.
Responding to the public outcry, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, reacted via X (formerly Twitter). He confirmed that the DPO involved in the incident had been “sanctioned and removed” from his position. Edafe also disclosed that the money allegedly extorted from Wojuola during the ordeal had been fully refunded, signaling disciplinary action by the command.
The sanctioning of the DPO has been widely welcomed by the public as a positive step toward restoring trust in the Nigeria Police Force. The case has also reignited discussions on the need for systemic reforms, proper oversight, and protection for citizens who choose to act as good Samaritans in emergency situations.
