Fresh details have emerged surrounding the tragic passing of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, who died on Monday, January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital. Fans and the gospel music community were left in shock following the sudden news of her death.
Lanre Alewilese, a close friend and colleague of the late singer, shared an emotional account of her final moments. According to Alewilese, in the weeks leading to her passing, Omije Ojumi was unable to speak or open her eyes, revealing the severity of her condition.
“…In the final weeks leading up to Omije Ojumi’s death, she was unable to open her eyes or speak for weeks. I intentionally kept her condition a secret from the public because there was no positive update. I didn’t want to worry anyone unnecessarily. She was struggling, and it was heartbreaking to see her like that…” Alewilese said.
He also revealed that he deliberately chose not to disclose her deteriorating health earlier to protect fans from undue worry. His decision underscores the painful reality of witnessing a loved one endure suffering while trying to shield others from emotional distress.
Omije Ojumi was widely celebrated for her soulful gospel music, which touched countless lives across Nigeria and beyond. Her passing marks a significant loss for the Nigerian gospel community, with fans flooding social media to mourn the singer and celebrate her legacy.
As the nation continues to grieve, friends and family remember her not only for her powerful voice but also for her humility, faith, and impact on gospel music. Bunmi Akinnaanu’s legacy as Omije Ojumi will continue to inspire both emerging gospel artists and her fans for years to come.
