BBNaija star Queen Mercy Atang has kicked off the New Year by making a bold personal statement as she proudly unveiled her first-ever tattoo, sparking reactions across social media.
The reality television personality took to her Instagram page to share a video capturing the moment she got inked, revealing that the decision marked a shift in how she once viewed people with tattoos.
According to Queen, she previously believed tattoos were associated with “bad children,” a mindset she now finds ironic as she embraces her own choice.
Reflecting on the moment, Queen admitted that getting a tattoo made her question her long-held beliefs, jokingly asking herself if she had now become a “bad child.”
However, she made it clear that she is unconcerned about public opinion, stating that she intends to make more personal decisions that bring her happiness, regardless of how they are perceived.
The former BBNaija housemate also revealed that her decision would likely shock her godmothers and family members, especially her mother. Anticipating their reactions, Queen explained that she deliberately made the post while away from home to avoid immediate confrontation and nonstop phone calls.
In her words, she noted that while her loved ones might be surprised by the tattoo, she believes that every child has the right to choose what makes them happy. She added that personal fulfilment should always take priority over societal expectations.
Queen further disclosed that she tried alcohol for the first time during the tattoo session, explaining that it helped her cope with the pain. She clarified, however, that she is not a regular drinker and only took a little to ease the discomfort.
Her revelation has since stirred conversations online, with fans sharing mixed reactions. While some applauded her confidence and self-expression, others expressed concern about her choices, echoing the very judgments she addressed in her post.
Tattoos have increasingly become a form of self-expression among Nigerian celebrities, with many public figures openly embracing body art. Last year, music superstar Davido made headlines after showcasing a tattoo of his wife Chioma’s name during his pre-wedding shoot. Businessman Wale Jana praised the gesture, describing it as a strong symbol of commitment and maturity.
Similarly, relationship expert Blessing CEO and businessman IVD also made waves after tattooing each other’s names. Blessing explained that tattoos represent deep emotional encryption, artistic beauty, and affection between partners.
Influencer Laura Ikeji Kanu has also joined the trend, tattooing the names of her children on her hand and sharing the emotional significance behind the move. BBNaija winner Phyna, on her part, revealed a phoenix tattoo on her back, describing it as a powerful symbol of resilience and rebirth after enduring life’s challenges.
Queen Mercy’s decision adds her name to the growing list of celebrities using tattoos as a means of personal storytelling. Whether viewed as rebellion or self-expression, her bold step reflects a changing attitude toward body art in modern Nigerian society.
