Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has once again made history with her latest film, Behind The Scenes, which has officially become the highest-grossing movie in African cinema.

The milestone was confirmed on Monday by FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor, revealing that ticket sales have now reached ₦2,103,039,706.

This remarkable achievement sets a new benchmark for Nollywood and underscores Akindele’s continued influence on the continent’s film industry.

Behind The Scenes had already made waves, crossing the ₦1 billion mark earlier and later reaching ₦1.77 billion. With this latest record, the film not only became the first Nollywood production to surpass ₦2 billion but also secured its position as the highest-grossing Nollywood release in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

FilmOne Entertainment hailed the accomplishment as “breaking and shattering records,” emphasizing that Akindele has now ranked number one at the African box office for three consecutive years—a feat unparalleled in West African cinema history.

The film’s success has cemented Funke Akindele’s status as one of Africa’s most commercially successful filmmakers.

As a writer, director, and producer, Akindele has continually pushed Nollywood’s boundaries, blending compelling storytelling with commercially viable cinema.

FilmOne described the milestone as more than just a box office victory, noting it as “a cultural movement” driven by loyal cinema audiences and word-of-mouth buzz.

Behind The Scenes features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Akindele herself, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, and Kamo State.

This mix of established stars and rising talents contributes to the film’s dynamic appeal, offering audiences a blockbuster cinematic experience.

The narrative and performances have resonated deeply with viewers, combining relatable storytelling with high production value.

Its consistent box office growth reflects the strong connection between Nollywood films and African audiences worldwide, who continue to support locally produced content while encouraging innovation in storytelling and production.

Funke Akindele’s achievement with Behind The Scenes is a clear testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence in filmmaking.

Her ability to deliver commercially successful and culturally impactful movies places her at the forefront of African cinema, inspiring a new generation of filmmakers and reinforcing Nollywood’s global relevance.

With this historic success, Akindele continues to prove that African stories, when told with authenticity and skill, can compete with the best in global cinema.
