Femi Kuti has weighed in on the recent debate surrounding comparisons between Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and global music star Wizkid, stressing that his late father should be idolised and respected rather than placed in competition with any modern-day artiste.

The Grammy-nominated musician, who is Fela’s first son, addressed the controversy during an interview with Arise TV via Skype from Los Angeles.

His comments come after Wizkid stirred reactions online by claiming he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticisms from Seun Kuti.

Seun had earlier faulted the frequent comparisons between Wizkid and the Afrobeat pioneer, sparking a heated exchange that drew attention across social media and the entertainment industry.

Reacting to the situation, Femi Kuti said he wished the controversy had never surfaced, noting that both Wizkid and Seun hold important places in his life. According to him, public disagreements of this nature distract from more pressing national issues that artists should focus on addressing.

Femi explained that he values his relationship with both parties involved and prefers not to be drawn into their differences.

He described the debate as unnecessary, adding that it shifts attention away from matters that truly require collective concern, such as governance and social development.

He maintained that Fela’s contribution to music and activism places him in a unique category that should not be subjected to comparisons.

According to Femi, Fela’s influence goes beyond hit songs and global recognition, as he created a cultural and political movement through his music that continues to inspire generations.

Speaking further, Femi emphasised that younger artists already show respect for Fela’s legacy and do not need to prove their greatness by measuring themselves against him.

He stated that Fela remains the musical and artistic template in Nigeria and deserves to be honoured without debate.

He said Fela should be placed in a league of his own and celebrated for the lasting impact he made on Afrobeat, African culture, and social consciousness.

Femi added that he does not want to delve into the disagreement between Seun and Wizkid, reiterating that Seun is his brother while Wizkid is someone he regards with affection.

Femi also expressed regret that the conversation gained traction, insisting that it would have been better if it never arose in the first place.

He believes artists should channel their voices towards meaningful advocacy that benefits society rather than engaging in comparisons that divide fans and distract from real issues.

Meanwhile, Femi Kuti is currently in Los Angeles, where he is expected to receive Fela’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony.

The honour is seen as a significant recognition of Fela’s enduring legacy and his role in shaping Afrobeat into a global genre.

Femi concluded by urging people to continue celebrating Fela’s contributions while allowing contemporary artists to grow and define their own paths without unnecessary rivalry.

He noted that respect for the past and support for the present can coexist, adding that music should remain a unifying force rather than a source of division.
