Plans for the burial of late Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, have been officially called off, following unresolved issues within her family.

The development was confirmed on Saturday by Lanre Alewilese, a close associate and colleague of the deceased, who released a public statement announcing the cancellation of all previously scheduled burial arrangements.

According to Alewilese, the decision was reached after consultations revealed lingering internal challenges that made it impossible for the Burial Planning Committee to proceed as planned.

“To whom it may concern: This is to inform you that all plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by the Burial Planning Committee has been totally cancelled. This decision became necessary due to some issues arising from and within her family. We deeply regret the inconvenience,” the statement read.

The announcement has come as a shock to many members of the gospel music community and fans who had been preparing to pay their final respects to the beloved singer.

Omije Ojumi passed away on January 12, 2026, after battling a prolonged and severe leg-related illness. Her health condition, which reportedly involved persistent bleeding and mobility challenges, had previously drawn widespread concern, prayers, and support from colleagues, churches, and fans across the country.

Before the burial plans were cancelled, details of the funeral programme had been made public on Friday by fellow gospel singer Alayo Melody. In an Instagram post, Melody shared an official flier outlining a series of events planned to honour the late singer’s life and legacy.

According to the earlier schedule, burial activities were set to begin on Tuesday, January 20, with a service of songs at the LTV 8 Ground. This was to be followed by a candlelight procession by 7:00 pm and a tribute and artistes’ night scheduled for 8:00 pm on the same day.

The interment service was slated for Wednesday, January 21, and was described as a strictly private ceremony for family members and close associates.

However, with the latest announcement, all these arrangements have now been suspended indefinitely, pending the resolution of the family-related issues cited in the statement.

Omije Ojumi’s death marked a painful loss for the Nigerian gospel music scene. Born Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, she began singing at the age of 10 and later made a bold career shift by leaving her banking job to pursue gospel music full-time.

She rose to national recognition through her hit song “Omije Ojumi,” a deeply emotional and faith-filled track that resonated with many Nigerians and became a staple in churches and Christian homes across the country.

In the months leading up to her death, the gospel singer had openly appealed for prayers and divine intervention, sharing her struggles with the illness that eventually claimed her life. Her transparency and unwavering faith during the difficult period endeared her even more to supporters, many of whom rallied around her with spiritual and financial assistance.

Since the announcement of the burial cancellation, reactions have continued to pour in, with fans expressing confusion, sadness, and concern over the unresolved family matters. Many have also called for unity and peaceful dialogue to ensure that the late singer is eventually laid to rest with the honour and dignity she deserves.

As of now, no new burial date has been announced. Friends, colleagues, and admirers of Omije Ojumi remain hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon, allowing for proper funeral rites to be conducted in celebration of a life devoted to faith, music, and ministry.
