A Federal Capital Territory court has ordered the remand of Nollywood actress Angela Okorie in Suleja Correctional Centre following allegations of defamation linked to her long-running feud with fellow actress Mercy Johnson.
The development comes days after Okorie was arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre in Abuja. She was reportedly picked up at her Lagos residence in connection with a cybercrime complaint filed against her.
Confirming the court’s decision, a social media commentator, Seun, provided an update via his Instagram page, revealing that the actress would remain in custody pending the court’s next sitting, when her bail application will be considered.
“Breaking
Court remands Angela Okorie in Suleja Prison until adjourned date when bail will be discussed,” he wrote.
The case is believed to stem from a petition allegedly filed by Mercy Johnson last year, following a series of online attacks and damaging claims made against her by Okorie. Reports at the time suggested that the petition was based on repeated social media posts and live videos in which Angela accused Mercy of various forms of misconduct, including unverified claims of “spiritual wrongdoing.”
The controversy was further amplified when movie producer Stanley Ontop hinted that Mercy Johnson had worked with influential figures to ensure legal action was taken against Okorie. His comments added to the growing tension surrounding the case and intensified public interest.
However, Angela Okorie had previously dismissed reports of her arrest. During an Instagram Live session, she insisted that she was not arrested but merely invited for questioning by the authorities, which she honoured willingly.
“I was not arrested. I was invited and I went there,” the actress said at the time, attempting to downplay the seriousness of the situation.
The rift between Angela Okorie and Mercy Johnson has spanned several years, with both actresses frequently making headlines over their unresolved differences. While the root of their dispute has never been fully disclosed, it has repeatedly played out across social media platforms.
Last year, Okorie appeared to extend an olive branch when she claimed she had forgiven Mercy Johnson after learning that the actress was battling a serious illness. Despite this, Angela still advised Mercy to seek forgiveness from people she had allegedly wronged and cautioned her against what she described as using “church words” that did not reflect her true character.
Those remarks were quickly countered by Mercy Johnson’s close circle. Actress Regina Daniels publicly reacted via her Instagram story, dismissing Angela’s comments and urging Mercy not to accept her so-called forgiveness. Regina described Okorie’s claims as baseless and questioned her mental state.
The feud took a darker turn in 2024 when Angela Okorie openly accused Mercy Johnson and her mother of being witches. She later hosted an Instagram Live session with a woman described as Mercy’s former close friend, who made even more explosive allegations. During the live broadcast, the woman accused Mercy of involvement in witchcraft and claimed her late mother orchestrated spiritual attacks within the industry.
The allegations extended to claims that Mercy was aware of mysterious deaths in Nollywood and had allegedly “locked” the destinies of popular music group Style Plus and some of her colleagues—claims that were never substantiated.
Following the escalating drama, Angela revealed that she had unfollowed Regina Daniels, Mercy Johnson’s goddaughter, and others connected to the actress. She claimed she was under spiritual attack, alleging that “arrows” were sent to harm her but failed.
“They sent arrows, but it didn’t work,” she said in one of her online rants, adding that her adversaries would “soon cry blood.”
Angela further declared that she could not be silenced, insisting that she was strong both physically and spiritually.
As the legal battle now moves to the courtroom, many observers believe the case could mark a turning point in how online defamation and celebrity feuds are handled within Nigeria’s entertainment industry. For now, all eyes remain on the adjourned date, when the court is expected to rule on Angela Okorie’s bail application.
