“An Insult To The Nigerian Nation” — Deji Adeyanju Blasts Tinubu Over Tax Reform Act

Human rights lawyer and activist, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the federal government’s decision to commence the implementation of the controversial Tax Reform Act on January 1, despite unresolved allegations surrounding its legality.

Adeyanju described the move as a direct affront to Nigeria’s democratic principles and the rule of law, insisting that the disputed legislation is still mired in serious controversies, including alleged forgery and breaches of constitutional procedures.

 According to him, pushing ahead with the implementation without addressing these concerns undermines public trust in governance and weakens institutional accountability.

Reacting in a statement, Adeyanju warned that democracy cannot thrive where due process is ignored in favour of executive fiat. He argued that laws must not only be passed but must also be seen to have followed all constitutional requirements before being enforced.

“For President Tinubu to insist on implementing the disputed Tax Reform Act from today Jan1, despite the controversies and issues of f0rgery/ breaches of the constitutional process is an !nsult to the Nigerian nation and the concept of rule of law. Where did President Tinubu also get the power to unilaterally write off NNPC debts?” Adeyanju stated.

The activist further questioned the president’s authority to allegedly write off debts owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) without legislative approval.

 He noted that such financial decisions have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economy and should be subjected to proper oversight by the National Assembly.

Adeyanju emphasized that the constitution clearly defines the separation of powers and does not grant the president unchecked authority to alter fiscal obligations or enforce disputed laws. 

He warned that allowing such actions to go unchallenged could set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.

The implementation of the Tax Reform Act has sparked nationwide debate, with critics arguing that the law could place additional burdens on citizens and businesses at a time of economic hardship. 

Others have called for transparency and judicial review to resolve all legal disputes surrounding the Act before enforcement.

As public reactions continue to mount, Adeyanju urged Nigerians, civil society organizations, and legal professionals to remain vigilant and defend constitutional democracy, stressing that no reform, however well-intentioned, should override the rule of law.
