Nigerian singer and social media personality, Speed Darlington, has expressed relief that the Super Eagles did not win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), highlighting his commentary on the political implications surrounding the team’s performance.

Nigeria’s national team fell short of reaching the tournament final after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco in the semifinals.

The match had ended goalless after both regular and extra time, leaving the outcome to penalties, where Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyeamachi missed crucial spot-kicks.

The loss ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing their fourth AFCON title, forcing the Super Eagles to focus on the third-place playoff against Egypt to try and claim the bronze medal.

Despite the team’s efforts and solid performances throughout the tournament, their ambitions were cut short by the North African side’s resilience and composure during the penalty shootout.

Reacting to the result on social media, Speed Darlington tweeted, “Thank God APC can’t add AFCON to their list of achievements to hide their years of failure. AFCON bye bye.”

His comment appeared to link the team’s loss to broader political narratives, suggesting that a Super Eagles victory could have been politicized or leveraged by the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a public relations win.

Speed Darlington’s reaction has sparked discussion online, with some agreeing that sporting victories are often politicized in Nigeria, while others felt his remarks were insensitive to the players’ hard work.

Regardless, his commentary highlights the intersection of sports and politics in the country, demonstrating how major tournaments like AFCON can generate debate beyond the pitch.

As the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming match against Egypt, fans and analysts alike will be keen to see whether Nigeria can secure a podium finish and salvage some pride from the 2025 AFCON campaign.

The team will be under pressure to perform and provide a fitting conclusion to their tournament journey.
