Nigerian media mogul and EbonyLife CEO, Mo Abudu, has taken a moment to celebrate the remarkable dominance of women at the Nigerian box office this December, spotlighting Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Ini Edo for their outstanding cinema performances.

The trio currently hold a strong grip on Nigerian cinemas with their movies Behind The Scenes, Oversabi Aunty, and A Very Dirty Christmas, respectively. Their films have continued to draw massive audiences nationwide, reaffirming the commercial strength and creative influence of women in Nollywood.

Taking to her Instagram page, Mo Abudu described the actresses as “phenomenal queens of the box office”, praising their ability to captivate audiences while reshaping the future of the Nigerian film industry. According to her, the women are not only making films but also breaking barriers and redefining leadership in cinema.

She wrote:

“Good morning, beautiful people!

Today, let’s celebrate the phenomenal queens of the box office lighting up December in Nigeria!

From @FunkeJenifaAkindele’s Behind the Scenes to @Toyin_Abraham’s Oversabi Aunty and @IniEdo’s A Very Dirty Christmas, these incredible women are creating magic, breaking barriers, and showing the unstoppable strength of women in film.”

Mo further encouraged movie lovers to head to cinemas nationwide, including EbonyLife Cinemas, to experience the films. She concluded her message by applauding women who continue to lead, inspire, and shape the future of the Nigerian entertainment space.

However, his post was widely misinterpreted as a subtle jab at his female colleagues who are currently breaking box office records.

Addressing the controversy in a follow-up post, AY clarified that his statement had nothing to do with Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Ini Edo, or any other female filmmaker. He stressed that they had all shown him encouragement and support, explaining that his comments were solely directed at men who fail to uplift their fellow men in the industry.
