American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court following an incident that occurred during his performance at a music festival in the country last year.

The rapper, whose real name is Thomaz Cameron Jibril, was accused of smoking cannabis on stage while performing at the popular Beach, Please! music festival held in Costinesti in 2024.

The act, which was captured and widely circulated online, sparked legal action under Romania’s strict drug laws, where the possession and use of cannabis remain illegal.

Initially, Wiz Khalifa was fined 3,600 Romanian lei, equivalent to about £619 or $829, after being found guilty of drug possession. However, the case took a dramatic turn after a Romanian appeals court reviewed the ruling.

The appellate court overturned the fine and imposed a much harsher sentence, ordering the rapper to serve nine months in prison.

The court ruled that the offence warranted a custodial sentence despite the relatively small quantity involved and the public nature of the act.

According to reports, the court viewed the incident as a violation of Romanian law that occurred in front of a large audience, including minors, which contributed to the severity of the judgment.

Wiz Khalifa was sentenced in absentia, meaning he was not present in court when the ruling was delivered.

Despite the legal development, the rapper has continued with his professional commitments. Earlier this week, he was spotted performing on stage in California alongside fellow rapper Gunna, showing no immediate signs of disruption to his career.

In addition, Wiz Khalifa has remained active on social media and streaming platforms. On Thursday, he shared photos and video clips from his home via Twitch and other social media channels, giving fans a glimpse into his daily life amid the unfolding legal situation.

The sentence has generated mixed reactions online, with many fans expressing shock at the severity of the punishment, while others pointed out that artists are expected to respect the laws of countries they visit, regardless of differences in legal systems or cultural attitudes toward cannabis use.

Romania maintains a zero-tolerance stance on illegal drug possession and use, a policy that differs sharply from the more relaxed cannabis laws in several parts of the United States, where recreational and medicinal use has been legalized in some states.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Wiz Khalifa’s legal team plans to challenge the ruling further or negotiate alternative penalties. The case serves as a reminder to international artists about the importance of understanding and complying with local laws while touring abroad.
