Nigerian media personality and On-Air host, Toolz Oniru-Demuren, has sparked reactions online after expressing shock over vendors selling fake Birkin bags for exorbitant prices reportedly reaching over N8 million.
In a post shared on her Instagram page, the popular media star, who is also a mother of two, questioned why anyone would spend such a huge amount on a counterfeit luxury item when genuine alternatives exist.
Toolz noted that the trend of overpriced replicas is becoming increasingly common in Nigeria’s fashion market. According to her, it makes no sense for anyone to pay millions of naira for a fake designer handbag when they could “save for a few more months” and purchase an authentic Birkin or opt for a pre-owned, authenticated version at a more reasonable rate. She emphasized that personal style does not require slavishly following luxury trends.
In her words:
“My people, why did I just see a vendor selling a fake Birkin for over N8m?? (£4,000/ $5,500) Even a milli is way too much! Are people really buying?? Is everything ok at home? If you can pay that, just save for a few more months and buy a real one or an authenticated pre-owned/ pre-loved one? Or just get good quality, affordable brands that aren’t fakes…will you get flogged if you aren’t rocking designer brands?”
Toolz also called out vendors who intentionally inflate the prices of replica designer bags, urging them to be honest and transparent about their products. She insisted that there is nothing wrong with buying affordable, non-designer brands, and no one should feel pressured by societal expectations.
She concluded her message humorously, saying:
“And if you do sell fake/ replica designer brands, pls be for real with your prices! Thank you for coming to my TED talk.”
Her commentary has since stirred debates on social media about authenticity, societal pressure, luxury fashion culture, and the alarming rise of overpriced replicas in Nigeria’s fashion space.
