Veteran actor Wale Ojo is set to surprise fans and movie enthusiasts with his latest project, ‘This is Not a Nollywood Movie’, a film that promises to deliver a fresh, comedic, and action-packed take on Nigerian cinema.

Produced by Boma Akpore, the movie recently premiered at iMax Cinemas, Lekki, attracting a stylish crowd of movie lovers who came out in full force, donning show-stopping outfits. Shot across Nnewi in Southeast Nigeria and Lagos, the film features a mix of seasoned actors and rising stars, including Samuel Animashaun Perry (Brother Shaggi), Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Hanks Anuku, among others.

Ojo, who is widely celebrated for roles in movies like Breath of Life and The Man Died, explores uncharted territory in this project. Known for his versatility, the actor demonstrates a new facet of his talent, blending comedy and high-energy storytelling. Observers say the film showcases a fast-paced, thrilling narrative while keeping the audience in fits of laughter.

Although Ojo is often referred to as a British-Nigerian actor, his performance in this movie highlights his deep connection to Nigerian culture and pidgin English, proving that he can bridge both worlds seamlessly.

The plot follows a struggling actor who, along with his best friend, leaves everything behind in his Nnewi village to pursue his dreams in Lagos. Armed only with faith and the aspiration of receiving an international award, he sets out to create a groundbreaking film. However, upon arriving in Lagos, the pace of life and unexpected challenges push him to his limits, creating moments that are both hilarious and eye-opening.

Ahead of the premiere, Ojo expressed his excitement and the vision behind the film. “Today’s event is going to be a landmark in the scale of Nigerian movies. ‘This is not a Nollywood movie’ is something that I have devised and I hope the audience are going to love it. It is full of laughter and action and I want people to come into the theatre and have a good time,” he said.

He added, “There is going to be a lot of the unexpected in the film; a lot of things that you’ve never seen in any other Nigerian film, and I just hope it builds up the level of what we have right now.”

Ojo also acknowledged the challenges encountered during production. “There were a few challenges, but we got over them. But that was because we were trying to do a lot of stuff that had not been done before. So it’s a lot of hard work. Overall, it was fun producing the film. I believe I gathered together a very good cast, so I’m just excited. I want people to enjoy and criticise it, and see if they love it.”

On the thematic message of the movie, the actor noted: “The message in this movie is that we should hold on to our own very strongly, very positively. We’re in very difficult times, and we as artists are the cultural leaders; we are the conscious warriors of a nation, and we have to build the spirit of our nation. And I think the movie does that in a great way. Right now, we should be a Country of Particular Entertainment.”

When asked about the budget, Ojo revealed, “Very expensive. I can’t give you a figure but it is very expensive. Even the promotion!”

With its unique storyline, stellar cast, and blend of comedy and drama, ‘This is Not a Nollywood Movie’ promises to be a cinematic experience that redefines expectations for Nigerian films, offering both entertainment and a fresh perspective on contemporary Nollywood storytelling.
