The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has named internationally recognised writer Chimamanda Adichie, African Development Bank executive Prof. Kevin Urama, and University of Chicago political economist Prof. James Robinson as Visiting Professors, in a move aimed at strengthening the university’s global academic standing.

The appointments, approved by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya, were communicated through official letters dated December 18, 2025.

According to UNN, the new Visiting Professors will engage in teaching, mentorship, research collaboration, and strategic academic interactions to elevate the university’s international profile.

Chimamanda Adichie, celebrated worldwide for her contributions to literature and intellectual discourse, is expected to enrich the arts and humanities at UNN.

“Her Visiting Professorship will add immense value to our academic community through lectures, scholarly engagements, and the mentorship of students and young academics,” the university said.

Prof. Kevin Chika Urama, a distinguished development economist and senior official at the African Development Bank, was appointed for his expertise in development economics, climate policy, and evidence-based decision-making. UNN stated that his involvement will strengthen research and teaching in economics and development studies.

Prof. James Robinson, a globally respected political economist at the University of Chicago, renowned for his work on governance, institutions, and economic development, will provide opportunities for academic collaboration and expose students and lecturers to advanced scholarship in political economy.

Commenting on the appointments, UNN’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Agha Egwu, said, “The University of Nigeria was founded to be a globally competitive institution. These appointments represent a significant step towards reclaiming that legacy and enhancing the university’s global relevance.”

He further noted that the Visiting Professorships are aimed at fostering knowledge exchange, strengthening international partnerships, and connecting theory with practical policy solutions.

Egwu added that these latest appointments bring the number of Visiting Professors recruited by the Vice-Chancellor in December 2025 to four, describing it as “a clear signal of UNN’s renewed drive for global excellence.”
