Nollywood celebrities have come out strongly in support of actress and filmmaker Ini Edo following a heated controversy involving the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of her new movie, A Very Detty Christmas.
The respected movie star addressed the issue during an emotional Instagram Live session, where she revealed that the Christian Association had allegedly threatened to take down the film over concerns that the title was offensive to the Christian faith.
According to Ini Edo, she never intended for the title to stir controversy or cause offence.
“If I had known the title would be an issue, I would have changed it,” the actress said during the live video.
Ini Edo, who openly identified herself as a devout Christian, issued a public apology to the Christian Association and believers who felt hurt by the movie title.
She explained that the film does not in any way insult God, Christmas, or the Christian faith, adding that her beliefs are deeply personal and integral to who she is.
“I am a Christian myself. I would never deliberately insult or disgrace my faith,” she stated, while also encouraging Christians to watch the movie before judging it.
The actress went further to share details about her background, emphasizing that she was raised in the Christian faith and remains a strong believer.
Following her statement, Nollywood stars flooded her comment section with words of encouragement and support. Actress Queen Nwokoye wrote, “It’s well, my love. You will pull through.” Singer Waje described the situation as painful, saying, “This is just heartbreaking, garc work, time, everything you put into this.” Actor Akah Nnani questioned the association’s priorities, asking, “This is what CAN should be focusing on now?”
Others like Allwell Ademola reassured her with “Be strong, dear. It is well,” while reality star Phyna added, “God is in control, Omo can which way na?”
Earlier, CAN had released a formal statement expressing deep concern over the movie title, arguing that Christmas represents purity, redemption, and spiritual significance. The association described the word “detty” as disrespectful and called on Ini Edo and the producers to reconsider the title and issue a public apology.
Responding to the criticism, Ini Edo defended her creative expression, noting that art is meant to provoke thought, spark conversations, and reflect real human experiences. She reiterated that she would never knowingly undermine her faith or the sacredness of Christmas.
