Nigeria’s men’s national football team has ended the year without any movement in the global standings, retaining 38th place in the latest FIFA men’s rankings released in December 2025.

According to the update published on Monday, the Super Eagles remained on the same points tally of 1,502 they recorded in November. With no competitive international matches played during the review period, Nigeria’s position on the global table stayed unchanged, reflecting a period of stability rather than progression.

Within Africa, Nigeria continues to rank fifth, maintaining its place among the continent’s elite football nations. Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked team, sitting 11th in the world following a strong run of results in recent months. Senegal occupies second place on the continent at 19th globally, while Algeria and Egypt follow closely at 34th and 35th respectively. Nigeria trails just behind them in 38th position.

Rounding out Africa’s top 10 are Tunisia in 41st place, Côte d’Ivoire at 42nd, Mali ranked 53rd, DR Congo in 56th, and Cameroon closing the list at 57th. The rankings highlight the competitive nature of African football, with several teams clustered closely together on the global ladder.

On the world stage, Spain retained their position at the summit of international football. The European giants reclaimed first place from Argentina earlier in the year and have held onto the top spot ever since. France remains third globally, while England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Croatia complete the rest of the top 10. Notably, there were no changes among the leading nations compared to the previous rankings.

The December edition of the FIFA rankings marks the final update of 2025 and was calculated based on 42 international matches played worldwide. The most significant tournament during the period was the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, which had a notable impact on the standings of participating teams.

Morocco emerged as one of the major beneficiaries of the rankings update. Their victory at the Arab Cup has propelled them closer to a return to the global top 10 for the first time since April 1998. The Atlas Lions now trail 10th-placed Croatia by just 0.54 points, underlining their impressive rise and consistency on the international scene.

Elsewhere, several countries recorded significant movements across the year. Kosovo stood out as one of 2025’s biggest climbers, jumping 19 places to reach 80th in the world after securing seven wins and two draws from 10 matches. Norway also enjoyed a productive year, climbing to 29th, while Suriname moved up to 123rd following a series of positive results.

The December rankings also highlighted notable short-term gains, with Jordan advancing to 64th place, Vietnam rising to 107th, and Singapore climbing to 148th, making them some of the biggest movers in the final update of the year.

For Nigeria, finishing the year in the same position reflects consistency but also underlines the work ahead. As the Super Eagles continue their campaign at the ongoing AFCON 2025, stronger performances and positive results will be crucial if they are to climb higher in the global rankings and reassert themselves among the world’s top footballing nations in the year ahead.
