Nollywood actress and filmmaker Judy Austin has stirred conversations online after sharing candid advice directed at married women and single mothers ahead of the Christmas celebrations.

The actress urged women to avoid unnecessary financial pressure on themselves and their families during the festive season, stressing that Christmas should not become a source of stress or debt.

In a video shared on her social media platforms on Tuesday, December 23, Judy Austin encouraged women to tone down expectations and stop pressuring their husbands for extravagant gifts, lavish meals, or expensive celebrations. According to her, Christmas should be approached like any other regular day when funds are limited.

She emphasized the importance of living within one’s means and embracing contentment over societal pressure, especially during the festive period when spending expectations are often heightened.

“I have an important message: If you don’t have money for Christmas shopping, this message is for you. Please stop pressuring your husbands. You are a single mum taking care of everybody, so stop pressuring yourself for Christmas.

We celebrate Christmas every other year. View this Christmas week as a week in July; don’t see it as Christmas week. View it like this August; that way, you wouldn’t be under any pressure,” she said.

Judy further questioned the societal norms surrounding Christmas celebrations, insisting that there is no rule mandating elaborate meals or expensive purchases on December 25.

“It is not a must to kill chicken, turkey, or goat every 25th. Who created that law? If you don’t have money to buy anything, don’t buy anything. Don’t pressure your husband; it will overwork him, and he will be scared to come home. Be content with what you have,” she added.

While some social media users praised the actress for promoting financial wisdom and understanding within marriages, others reacted critically, referencing her controversial personal life and accusing her of attempting to rebrand herself.

One commenter, @Ngozi Ifeoma Nzeduba Udoka-Abazie, wrote: “O Sino Gini?? Abeg tell am make e enter hase and continue the dancing and hailing episodes. Rebranding on Fire!! E no go work!!”

Another user, @John Isaac Oyindamola, responded sarcastically: “Good advice for you ooo una don hear ooo.”

Others, such as @Gist & Trend with Jennifer, remarked: “Understanding wife we have seen you.”

Meanwhile, @Lizzy Awini questioned her message, stating: “And you were not content with what you had (Mr Obasi).”

Despite the mixed reactions, Judy Austin’s message has succeeded in reigniting conversations around financial responsibility, societal pressure, and realistic expectations during Christmas, especially for families navigating economic challenges.
