Nollywood filmmaker Niyi Akinmolayan is set to close 2025 with a major cinematic spectacle as he prepares to release Colours of Fire, a drama that pits two powerful houses against each other in a fierce contest for dominance.

Scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on December 24th, 2025, the film promises a blend of mythology, culture, female power, and emotional intensity wrapped in Akinmolayan’s signature storytelling style.

At the heart of the narrative is actress Mercy Aigbe, who takes on the role of the formidable matriarch leading the illustrious House of Efunsetan. Her character is portrayed as a woman of authority, wisdom and unyielding determination, steering her family through political tensions and generational rivalries. According to the filmmakers, the film uses colour as a symbolic language; the houses are represented by vivid tones—red, earthy orange, and fiery yellow—each reflecting the personality, temperament and heritage of the women who lead them.

The women of Colours of Fire are described as “fierce, magical and unyielding,” setting the stage for a story that not only explores conflict but celebrates feminine strength. The film draws heavily on themes of legacy, power struggles and a deep cultural identity, offering viewers a world where alliances, traditions and destiny shape the fate of entire clans.

Written and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, one of Nigeria’s most innovative filmmakers, Colours of Fire marks a return to the kind of layered, character-driven storytelling that has defined many of his standout projects. Akinmolayan’s previous works—with their blend of fantasy, emotion and cultural depth—have earned him a reputation for pushing creative boundaries in Nollywood. With Colours of Fire, he appears ready to elevate that vision even further.

The movie brings together a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Osas Ighodaro, Uzor Arukwe, Mercy Aigbe, Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chattah, and Gabriel Afolayan. Each actor is expected to bring a unique interpretation to the complex relationships and conflicts within the story’s rival houses. The casting suggests a strong blend of veterans and modern Nollywood favourites, hinting at intense performances and layered character arcs.

Behind the scenes, the production is powered by two major industry forces—Anthill Studios and FilmOne Studios—both known for delivering high-quality cinema projects with nationwide reach. The film is executive-produced by Anthill Studios, Filmon Entertainment, and Imuetinyan Productions, an indication that the project carries significant financial backing and collaborative strength. With these studios involved, expectations for top-tier cinematography, sound design and cultural aesthetics are high.

Industry watchers have described Colours of Fire as one of the most anticipated Nigerian films of the coming year, not only because of its release date but because of the weight of the creative team behind it. A Christmas Eve premiere positions the film to take advantage of the festive cinema rush, drawing families, film lovers and holiday audiences looking for visually rich, emotionally engaging stories.

As more details surface about the narrative world and character dynamics, excitement continues to build around what may be one of Niyi Akinmolayan’s most ambitious productions yet. With themes drawn from African heritage, a powerful female-driven storyline and a cast of Nollywood heavyweights, Colours of Fire seems poised to ignite both critical and commercial interest when it finally lights up cinemas on December 24th, 2025.
