Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has been honoured with another traditional title in Lagos, marking a fresh recognition of his role in cultural and community engagement. His wife was also conferred with a corresponding title during the same ceremony.
The installation took place in Lagos, where Seyi Tinubu was bestowed with the title Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun, a position rooted in Yoruba cultural heritage and symbolism.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, congratulated Tinubu on the honour, describing it as a reflection of his dedication to service, cultural values, and the people of Lagos.
“I warmly congratulate Barrister Oluwaseyi Tinubu on his installation as the Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun. This honour reflects service, character, and commitment to our culture and people,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu also wished him wisdom, strength, and clarity as he assumes the responsibilities that come with the new traditional role.
The Lagos installation comes barely five days after Seyi Tinubu and his wife, Layal Tinubu, received prestigious chieftaincy titles in Oyo State. On December 21, 2025, the couple was honoured by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during a colourful ceremony held at the royal palace in Oyo town.
At that event, Seyi Tinubu was installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, while his wife received the title Yeye Okanlomo of Yorubaland. The ceremony attracted an array of dignitaries from across the country, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, serving ministers, state governors, traditional rulers from different parts of Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, as well as senior government officials.
The title Okanlomo of Yorubaland, which loosely translates to “the beloved child” or “one cherished by the people,” is regarded as a symbol of unity, service, and commitment to the preservation of Yoruba traditions and values. It is often bestowed on individuals considered worthy ambassadors of culture and community development.
While conferring the honour in Oyo, the Alaafin commended Seyi Tinubu for what he described as his dedication to youth empowerment, social advancement, and efforts toward strengthening Yoruba cultural identity.
In his acceptance remarks at the palace, Seyi Tinubu expressed appreciation for the recognition and pledged to uphold the values associated with the title.
“I accept this title with humility and a deep sense of responsibility to serve our people and promote peace and progress across Yorubaland,” he said.
The back-to-back traditional honours have drawn public attention, reflecting Seyi Tinubu’s growing profile within cultural and social circles. Supporters view the recognitions as acknowledgements of his engagement with community-focused initiatives, while also highlighting the continued relevance of traditional institutions in celebrating service and leadership.
With the latest Lagos installation, Seyi Tinubu joins a long line of individuals recognised through traditional titles for their perceived contributions to society, reinforcing the enduring connection between leadership, culture, and community values in Yoruba land.
