Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland in a colourful traditional ceremony that took place in Oyo State on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The prestigious traditional title was conferred on him by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, during a grand event held inside the historic Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo town.
The ceremony attracted dignitaries from across the country, including political leaders, traditional rulers, youth representatives and cultural enthusiasts.
The Okanlomo title is regarded as a significant honour within Yorubaland, symbolising courage, leadership, service to the people and commitment to cultural values.
By bestowing the title on Seyi Tinubu, the traditional institution acknowledged his growing influence among young Nigerians and his involvement in philanthropic and youth-focused initiatives.
Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, described the conferment as well-deserved and timely.
He noted that the honour reflects Tinubu’s rising relevance, especially among young people, as well as his dedication to social impact projects.
Ogundoyin stressed that the title goes beyond ceremonial recognition, explaining that it comes with responsibility and expectations of leadership.
According to him, the Okanlomo of Yorubaland is expected to serve as a bridge between tradition and modern society while promoting unity and development.
“This is not just a traditional title; it is a call to service and a recognition of leadership potential,” Ogundoyin said. He added that the honour embodies core Yoruba values such as excellence, community service, resilience and the pursuit of an enduring legacy.
The lawmaker also commended the Alaafin of Oyo for his commitment to preserving Yoruba heritage and strengthening the relevance of traditional institutions in contemporary Nigeria.
He noted that recognising individuals who reflect cultural pride and societal responsibility helps keep Yoruba traditions alive for future generations.
Ogundoyin further encouraged Seyi Tinubu to use his new role to promote unity across Yorubaland, empower youths, strengthen cultural identity and support sustainable development initiatives.
He expressed confidence that the titleholder would rise to the expectations attached to the honour.
Photos from the installation ceremony showed moments of rich cultural displays, traditional rites and celebrations that highlighted the deep heritage of the Yoruba people.
The event once again underscored the enduring influence of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s social and cultural landscape.
The installation of Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo of Yorubaland has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with supporters describing it as recognition of youth leadership, while others see it as a symbol of continuity between tradition and modern leadership.
