Controversy has erupted within Nigeria’s Christian community following a scathing public criticism by Pastor Kesiena Esiri, who has openly questioned the actions of Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo after he officiated the wedding ceremony of Pastor Chris Okafor and his wife.

Pastor Kesiena Esiri, known for his outspoken stance on moral accountability within the church, expressed deep concern over what he described as a troubling contradiction between Christian values and public actions. His criticism centers on Pastor Ashimolowo’s decision to preside over the wedding of Pastor Chris Okafor despite widespread allegations of moral misconduct linked to Okafor’s past.

According to Esiri, it is alarming that a man who allegedly divorced his wife, abandoned her with four children, and whose “story of how he’s fornic@ting everywhere is everywhere,” could still receive such public endorsement from respected spiritual leaders.

In a strongly worded statement, Pastor Esiri said:

“A man can divorce his wife, leave her with four children, his story of how he's forn!c@ting everywhere is everywhere, but somebody who is a father of faith will come and do his wedding, and somebody who he claimed has grown that he's a shepherd over sheep is dancing in his wedding to the sound of Babylon.”

He further questioned the spiritual foundation upon which such growth and acceptance were built, warning against confusing outward success with genuine godliness.

“We need to ask him, what water nourished his tree? How did you become a fruit-bearing tree that men are now standing in your shade?” Esiri asked.

Continuing, he challenged the authenticity of spiritual growth that lacks moral consistency:

“We need to ask you, what kind of life is powering your existence? I know that you have grown; you bear the mask of somebody who looks like they know God, but by what spirit did you grow…?”

The statement has since sparked intense debate across social media, with many Christians divided over whether church leaders should separate personal failings from public ministry or hold stricter moral standards, especially for those in leadership positions.

While Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo and Pastor Chris Okafor have yet to respond publicly to the criticism, the incident has reignited conversations about accountability, integrity, and the true measure of spiritual leadership in modern Christianity.
