Nigerian entrepreneur Obinwanne Okeke, widely known as Invictus Obi, has been released from prison in the United States, nearly four years ahead of his original 10-year sentence for fraud.

According to the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) website, Okeke’s custody status was updated on Wednesday, December 23, 2025, indicating that he is “Not in BOP Custody.”

Details surrounding the conditions of his release, including whether it involves supervised release or other legal provisions, have not yet been independently confirmed.

Okeke, a tech entrepreneur who gained prominence as one of Forbes’ 100 Most Influential Young Africans, was sentenced in February 2021 after pleading guilty to charges related to an $11 million fraud scheme.

His initial prison term was expected to run until September 3, 2028. The conviction stemmed from an email compromise scam targeting Unatrac Holding Limited, the export sales office for Caterpillar heavy industrial and farm equipment.

The scheme unfolded in 2018 when a Unatrac executive became a victim of a phishing email. This allowed the conspirators to access login credentials, submit fraudulent wire transfer requests, and attach fake invoices, ultimately defrauding the company.

Okeke was arrested by the FBI at Dulles International Airport in 2019 and later convicted for his role in orchestrating the elaborate fraud operation.

Okeke’s rise to fame in the tech industry was meteoric, with his entrepreneurial ventures earning him accolades and recognition both in Nigeria and across Africa.

Prior to his arrest, he was celebrated for his innovative contributions to technology and business development. His early release from prison marks a significant turn in his personal and professional life, though it remains unclear what his next steps will be.

The news of Invictus Obi’s release has stirred conversations online, with many Nigerians expressing a mix of surprise and curiosity regarding the circumstances of his early release.

While official statements from legal authorities regarding the specifics of his release are still pending, his return to the public eye is expected to generate interest among both business and tech communities.

As Nigerians continue to follow his story, observers are keen to see whether Okeke will resume his entrepreneurial pursuits or take a different path after serving part of his sentence.

His case remains a notable example of high-profile fraud cases involving Nigerians abroad, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges faced by young entrepreneurs in navigating global business and legal landscapes.
